Ruth Bader Ginsburg: US Supreme Court judge dies of cancer, aged 87

1 Exalted and sanctified be His great name
2 in the world which He created according to His will!
3 May He establish His kingdom
4 and may His salvation blossom and His anointed be nearad
5 during your lifetime and during your days
6 and during the lifetimes of all the House of Israel
7 speedily and very soon! And say, Amen
8 May His great name be blessed
9 for ever, and to all eternity!
10 Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted
11 extolled and honoured, adored and lauded
12 be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He
13 above and beyond all the blessings,
14 hymns, praises and consolations
15 that are uttered in the world! And say, Amen.

a very formidable woman, indeed.

Just a great pity she could not have lasted a couple more months!

Her last wish was that a replacement to the Supreme Court NOT be appointed until after the election.

What might happen now is very scary!

Sad news indeed.

Been reading about that, Sylvia. Trump seems determined doesn't he! Biden, of course, is saying 'wait.'

If Joe Biden becomes president AND the Democrats control the Senate as well as the House THEN there is no obstacle to making additional appointments to the Supreme Court until it has a liberal balance.

The threat by FDR to do just that is how he got the New Deal through Congress.
RBG would have been aware of that.

Rollo................

there is a limit to the number of Supreme Court Justices! That is unless Congress decides to replace the Judiciary Act of ca 1869, which of course they can do. There have never been more than 10, and the Constitution originally set the limit at 6.

If Trump appoints one now, it will remain 6-3 ultra-conservative, anti-abortion, anti-all women's rights until the next one dies. They don't even have a retirement age, that is why Ruth Ginsberg was still active at 87

The very sad, and nasty, part to me is that Mitch McConnell, the Republican Leader in the Senate, refused to allow a hearing on Barack Obama's nomination of a replacement for a judge who died in February 2016.

The reason??

It was too close to the Presidential election in November!!!

As a result, there was an empty chair until January 2017 when Trump's nomination was immediately passed.

So now McConnell is saying there is plenty of time with only 2 months left.

Bah Humbug! :-P

Yes, that is the whole point.
The number of judges is not immutable.

Given recent history Mitch McConnell could hardly complain that if the GOP gets their own lady into the chair the Democrats then add a couple more.

The GOP has been playing around with issues which affect the vote going all the way back to Jim Crow and gerrymandering. Their latest innovations include not having enough capacity to vote, removing mailboxes, requiring specific ID and then making it difficult to obtain, not accepting addresses without a US Zip code and even being equivocal about accepting the result of the electoral college.
