Funny that, Rollo, he must have gained that ability after he left Durham.

I did enjoy Wolf Hall when it was on.

Boris doesn't do hard yakka, I agree. He's a 'hail fellow, well met' type of person as far as I can see.

Dermot, I think he may turn out of the house perfectly groomed and clad but before he appears on camera he ruffles his hair and loosens his tie! :-D

The PM has a disastrous/diffident/distrustful mode of speaking.

And he always seems to be dishevelled - worse than Trump!

I encountered DC a few times during the brexit referendum campaign ... he has this ability to mesmerise people into a sort of catatonic trance. I can quite see how he could manipulate SAGE and other meetings.

As well as Rasputin others well known to have had this ability are Steerpike ( from Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy), Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, Adolf Hitler.

All came to a sticky end.

Boris' problem is that he is totally unable to do the hard yards of the job be it London Mayor or PM. He likes to be the front man with the broad brush ideas and a punchy turn of phrase leaving the graft to others. He sees himself as a political heir to W S Churchill. He has fallen into the classic trap of allowing an over mighty advisior to flourish. There are of course solutions.

As we know, R, rules and regulations are not legislation.

I have to ask, though, how many would go against the express desires and rules of his employer without being dismissed from his post, let alone such arrogance in thinking that rules do not apply to him.

According to news reports DC has now broken the isolation rule three times - once to Durham then a trip to Barnard Castle (which has a good proportion of elderly people) from Durham and then a second trip to Durham from London. (The surprise is that they did not take a trip to Chillingham too!)

It seems to me that BoJo needs to grow some and set the country a good example as Sturgeon did eventually with her medical sidekick.

He appears to be in awe of DC (as Gove seemed to be) - and it's this 'awe' perception that reminded me of Rasputin and Russian connections when I read your initial post.

Andrew Marr and the Chief Constable of Dorset have nailed down the issue which is not primarily the fate of Cummings as no.1 SPAD.

In a democracy you can make whatever rules and regulations you like but if the people have no confidence in you, don't believe you, view you as charlatans and hypocrites then the slender thread of democratic power is lost.

The only recourse then is dictat.

As to Dermot and golden silence. Being a god fearing man he should look up Matthew 26:34.

And silence itself, Dermot, can be damning.

Oh that those trotting out pathetic excuses for poor and arrogant behaviour would just keep their tongues still. That, itself, would speak a volume of words!

'A silent mouth is sweet to hear'. :-D

Just caught this, R.

It's not really all about Rasputin is it, but rather about the current Brit who seems to have a hold of those who ought to know better. So, tell me, do you think he has enough dirt on some people to stop them railing against him?

I have heard so many pathetic excuses in the last couple of days from him and from others that it makes me wonder whether they can actually hear themselves when they open their mouths.

Lions and donkeys spring to mind now. :-0 :-(

There was a cat that really was gone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiSdTQ9DW9g

There lived a certain man, in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the Bible like a preacher
Full of ecstasy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
Women would desire

[Chorus]
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Lover of the Russian Queen
There was a cat that really was gone
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

[Verse 2]
He ruled the Russian land and never mind the Tsar
But the kazachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state, he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the Queen he was no wheeler-dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
Who would heal her son

Ra, ra, Rasputin
Lover of the Russian Queen
There was a cat that really was gone
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

But when his drinking and lusting
And his hunger for power
Became known to more and more people
The demands to do something
About this outrageous man
Became louder and louder

"This man's just got to go!" declared his enemies
But the ladies begged, "Don't you try to do it, please"
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute, they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us" they kept demanding
And he really came

[Chorus]
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Lover of the Russian Queen
They put some poison into his wine
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and he said "I feel fine"
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Lover of the Russian Queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
Ra, ra, Rasputin
Russia's greatest love machine
And so they shot him till he was dead

Oh, those Russians....
