One of my rellies from way back was a chartered accountant, not the kind of people generally known for active protest. So I was a bit surprised to read this on his 1911 census return, scrawled boldly.

'VOTES FOR WOMEN
British subjects who are ashamed of its unconstitutional laws of inequality
and injustice to the makers of our country, "women!"
wife is a red hot suffragette and member of the London Socialist Political Union.'
