Heating system as dead as a dodo off to the cafe for a full English and a warm up. Somewhere I have a service contract hope it covers weekends. Brrrr
Electric power is ok but I don't have anything to plug in.
Any ideas or should I move out until Monday? It's times like this that you miss a large warm cat even more than usual.
brrr

If fuse box OK and timer on the system hasn't gone loopy phone engineers and take what you have to do from them. Only move out if they can't come and fix it straight away.

Nip into B&Qs whilst you are out and get a warm air heater

Always handy to have around just in case

At least you could warm one room.

Buy a few convector/oil filled freestanding electric radiators. They are quite small, on wheels and cost from £20. Purchase from Argos, large supermarkets with a home/electrical section, John Lewis, Screwfix or other builders suppliers.

Depending on your boiler, some types can experience a drop in pressure. Apparently it’s easy enough to reset.

Our boiler broke down the week before Christmas. With a 2 week industry shut down, it took a month before it was repaired. Thank goodness for a gas fire, 2 of the above mentioned radiators & a rarely used immersion heater for hot water!

Rollo, ....... or you could come here and I'll feed you a huge breakfast like the one I've just polished off. It'll warm the cockles of your heart as well as adding extra padding to you. :-D

Coffee pot at the ready. :-D

Is it gas heating?
Has the pilot light gone out?

Hot water bottles are comforting. I often fill one, when I make the morning cuppa. Our night electricity is cheaper rate, so I boil the kettle before the higher rate kicks in.

If our gas was off ( likely one day soon, when new pipes are put in locally ) I would also fill vacuum flasks to make a hot drink later.

Going out to the cafe seems a sensible plan.

Haven't you got insurance/breakdown cover?

RolloTheRed

Does MW ever read the whole of a post?
"I have a service contract hope it covers weekends."
aka insurance; covers 24/24. Only covers the CHS unit, not attached units or consequential damage from leaks (they are on the home ins. )

The number stuck on the boiler was out of service and I had not affixed the sticker with the new number. Fortunately the correct number was in another mobile phone. I was v lucky the engineer was alreeady nearby on another job and came right round jumping the queue.

An internal fuse had blown for no obvious reason. Once a new fuse was fitted the CHS and hot water came back to life. Wonderful.

In case that it could not be fixed the eng. would have lent us two or three fan heaters for the weekend.

Glad you're warm again, Rollo. There's nothing worse than being cold & miserable especially with lowering temperatures in the offing.

Are you going to arrange an extra service call? There might be an underlying cause for the fuse to have blown.

As an aside...

A indication of a blown fuse....
(Old fashioned wire, or glass fuses or car types)
IF the wire has disappeared completely, then its likely a real fault,
if the wire has merely melted in the middle then its just an overload....or the fuse was too small,

modern fuses are encapsulated so the fusible element isn't visible....

I had a problem last week and my power went off and gas central heating, but lights were on.
So I looked at the trip switches and sure enough ,one was down and wouldn’t stay up.so I took all my plugs out and put them in one by one until I found the one where the fuse had blown, then I went to the boiler and that wouldn’t go onuntil I reset it....was I relieved.!
Not bad for an over 80 yr old who is not that good with the things we usually leave to men.Its been Ok since!

Beware Rollo! We had the same thing happen a month ago on a freezing weekend and were lucky to get it quickly sorted, so only two chilly showers each that made hubby gasp and we had a gas fire in the lounge and bought a tiny fan heater to heat the bedroom before retiring.

Since then, the fridge freezer packed up a fortnight ago and the new one can't be delivered till next Tuesday, weather permitting, so we are back to daily shopping and wondering if the milk is 'off'. Then a week ago the sky box failed and we have to wait a fortnight for the new one to be installed. :-S

They say things come in 'threes' don't they. :-S

I'm impressed Brenda! :-)

Well full of English breakfast and totally knackered by 2 hours of riding I am not used to there was nothing mcuh else to do except flop on the sofa enjoying the wamrth and considering the whys and wherefores of blown fuses.

Thank you all for the advice. I will def fix up to have the device thoroughly checked out.

Brenda proves that anybody who can navigate a sax will find domestic electrics an easy ask. Impressed - I had no idea at all what was wrong ecept that it lay with the innards of the CHS. The contract does not allow the user to open it up and they stick a seal on it just to be sure.

Unless forced to I won't replace it before the summer the installation of the current one in mid winter remains an evil memory.

Rollo.if it had been a fault with the boiler I would have brought the experts in,but before that I wanted to see what had caused the power to go off.The fault was in another appliance,so I was saved a freezing cold house quite quickly.

I wouldn’t know my way around a sax,but am very competent with my piano.! lol.
