If Richard Hutchins is a son-in-law and Eliza Clapp is a dau-in-law, what relation are they to Edward & Sarah Perry?

Unfortunately there is no multiple choice answers :-(

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 13 Sep 2015 00:10

Are they step-son and step-daughter to the couple? Is this from a census record?

EDIT - after looking at the census images I would say that Hannah is their daughter and she is married to Richard Hutchins.

Eliza Clapp is Sarah's daughter so therefore Edward's step-daughter.

This is Edward and Sarah's marriage:-

First name(s) EDWARD
Last name PERRY
Marriage quarter 3
Marriage year 1845
Registration month -
MarriageFinder™ EDWARD PERRY married one of these people
***SARAH CLAPP***, ELIZABETH TOLMAN, ANN EDWARDS
District HONITON
District number -
County Devon
Country England

Son-in-law and daughter-in-law?

Richard Hutchins m Edward & Sarah Perry's daughter.
Clapp is Eliza's maiden name - she married Edward & Sarah Perry's son.

An alternative, if you are looking at a census image, is that they could be step-children. Sarah may have been married before and at least one (possibly both) are her children from her previous marriage. The same could also apply to Edward, if he's responsible for a previous wife's children.

Eliza Clapp 21 Unmarried, Daughter-in-law
Elizabeth Perry 9

Joshua Hutchins 1

I take that to mean that Richard is a Son-in-law by virtue of marrying Hannah

BUT Eliza is a stepdaughter, with Daughter-in-law being used in the old sense.

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 13 Sep 2015 00:42

Kathleen and Sylvia have it - daughter-in-law meant 'stepdaughter' at the time

So Richard Hutchins is a proper son-in-law the way we use that term

and Eliza Clapp is Sarah Perry's child from a first marriage (or before marriage) i.e. stepdaughter of the head of household

both are 'children by marriage', just by different routes :-)

but RMS, you do need to point us to what you're looking at with a question like that, i.e. give the census record!
