The Caravan Club have Meets and celebrate the Festival of Light by each caravan owner decorating their van with as many different forms of light as they can.

Yes, For those who know me, I am still alive and do pop on regularly to keep up with what is happening. It seems a struggle these days to keep a friendly chat site going , it was great not many years ago, but then I do appreciate many members are now memories

Merry Christmas Everyone and a Peaceful New Year

Festival of Lights is celebrated by other faiths. In Huddersfield there is a Festival of Lights from 6-8th December, worth a visit if in Yorkshire

Thanks for the explaination Elizabeth, it was interesting and adds to my knowledge, I will have to try to remember it all.

Glasgow Lass, will have to amaze my American cousins with that fact- especially as some of them are Jewish.

Happy Hanukkah.
( and Happy Thanksgiving to our US friends too)

Edit:
I have just been informed that it's been 125 years since the 1st day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving fell on the same date,
It is more than 79,000 years before it happens again !

Dear All

Hello

Today is the start of the jewish festival of Hanukkah or Chanukah,
which means Festival of Lights.

The word Hanukkah means rededication and celebrates one of the greatest miracles in Jewish history.

The festival reminds Jews of a time over 2500 years ago when Antiochus, a Syrian king, tried to make the Jewish people worship Greek gods.

A statue of Antiochus was erected in the Jewish temple and the Jews were ordered to bow down before him. The Ten Commandments forbid Jews to worship statues or idols and so they refused.

A small group of Jews called Maccabees rebelled, and after a three year war they recaptured Jerusalem from the Syrians. But the temple was all but destroyed.

The Jews had to clean and repair the Temple, and when they were finished they rededicated it to God.

They did this by lighting the lamp (Menorah) - which was a symbol of God's presence.

Only one small jar of oil was found, enough for one day, but miraculously the lamp stayed alight for eight days.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, Hanukkah is celebrated by lighting one candle on the Hanukiah
which is an eight-stemmed candelabrum each day.

Games are often played at Hanukkah. The most common game uses a dreidel
and is a popular way of helping children to remember the great miracle.

For our jewish friends and colleagues, Shalom.

Take gentle care
Best wishes
Elizabeth, EOS
