Brenda from Wales - thanks, your blind friend is lucky to have you as his friend, apart from my eye problems I've had a few health scares over recen years, but nothing scared me more than the possibility of losing my eyesight, as you say we don't realise how precious our eyesight is.

I wish you well and hope you get the treatment required .
We don't realise how precious our eyesight is...I help a blind man who lives alone and am always on the lookout for aids to help him cope.
Good luck .thank goodness for modern research.

Thank you all for your comments, very much appreciated, sadly specialist eye treatment for the elderly, like many other treatments, has become a bit of a post code lottery in recent years and although I am happy that I have been selected to receive this treatment, I feel deeply for those who may not be given this opportunity to save, what is one of life's most important gifts - the gift of sight.

I was diagnosed with cataracts in both my eyes a couple of years ago, however they could not remove them as I had another eye condition that needed to be dealt with first, they had also diagnosed that I had quite serious diabetic retinopathy problems in both my eyes - the tiny blood vessels in my eyes become blocked and leak.

I have had numerous laser treatments for the diabetic retinopathy problems and about a year ago they removed the cataract in my left eye but could not do the right eye because of the ongoing retinopathy problems in that eye.

About 3 months ago they were happy that they seemed to have got that under control but told me they still could not do the cataract in my right eye as they had discovered another problem, posterior vitreous detachment - the vitreous jelly has moved away from the retina at the back of the eye to the centre of the eye and is blocking the vision in that eye.

Although there is an operation, a vitrectomy, my ophthalmologist is reluctant to go down that route because of my age and the risks involved. Yesterday my ophthalmologist told me that there is a new treatment that does not involve invasive surgery, it is an injection, the treatment is waiting to be approved by NICE and if approved should be available in 2 to 3 months time.

Hopefully NICE will give approval for this treatment and this latest eye problem can be fixed and allow the operation to remove the cataract in my right eye to go ahead.

My fingers are crossed :-)
