Try putting them into a paper bag Sharron and they should keep longer. You can get a free paper mushroom bag from the supermarkets if you don't have any around.

Reminds me of my Mum who would fold every paper bag she got and put it in a drawer, there were dozens still there when we cleared her house after she died.

I was thinking that they keep clamped but not in my veg rack. They evidently don't like air.

S***bury's carrots are rubbish!
But we have on L*dl

Last year I complained that during 'carrot season' they were selling cr&p carrots that had obviously been clamped, and were only just suitable for animal fodder.
Suffice to say, they didn't know what I meant by 'clamped. :-| :-|

Probably because I don't keep them in the fridge. They go in the veg rack.

Sharron, Cannot understand you having prob's with carrots from Lidl. I too buy the carrots in a bag from them. I make a hole in the bag (stick me finger thro) and pop bag of carrots in bottom of fridge. Can still use them 10 days later! Lidl's carrots far superior/tastier to S'burys and those from our local market

I only like roast carrots or baby carrots from the tubs where I grow them.

I do remember though the embarrassment of going to the local CO OP to get items that were on ration . Mum would send me with the ration books and the assistant would go to her manager who sat in the clouds with a window overlooking the shop floor pointing out that the books had been rubbed out for a weeks ration for some items. Mum used bread to rub out the ink line.

The manager would look down from his eagles nest to me in the shop and then would tell the assistant to sell me the item but with a warning to tell mum!!

He knew we were a BIG family so was sympathetic to our needs BUT I HATED being sent shopping cos i KNEW !!

My Lissy can tell difference between taste of her dads carrots from allotment and shop bought ones, she used to moan that they were all dirty and not as big as ones from shops but she soon used to moan if we ran out and had to have shop ones as didn't taste as nice.

I think Fred likes to go to the café so much because they don't make him have veg. He has moaned in the past that we were having carrots again.

I don't cook chips because I don't like them much and they are a bit of a faff so he has them when he is out I think.

Marguerite Patten is amazing. If more people had carried on eating as the did in the war, I don't think there would have been much of a credit crunch now.

A lot of the food in the wartime cookery books is absolutely delicious but people have forgotten that in the quest for food that is sold as quicker to prepare when there is probably not much difference.

BUT I hate carrots so maybe not someone who should comment .

Like em RAW !!!! but hate em cooked . was only allowed by mum not to eat em in stews etc cos Dad didnt like em either so that was alright ,I took after dad!!

Any other foods on our plates had to be ate and we would sit at the table till we did.

Well this was just after WW2 and some food was still rationed .

I now marvel how mum fed us all on rations

I buy them in a bag from Lidl because we are still learner gardeners and don't grow many.

Now, when I get them home, well I wouldn't do it in Lidl would I, I peel and cut them immediately and put them in the freezer.

Otherwise, within a couple of days, they start to remind me of somebody I used to go out with!
