To use up a lot of apples, I made some little cakes, sponge with some chopped apple and sultana put into it. They didn't look particularly spectacular.

I gave three to a friend who didn't like them because they had apple in so she left them on the side to give back to me.

Her daughter-in-law visited her, bringing her own granddaughter.

The little girl pestered for one of these cakes and then ate both of them with great delight

It seems she was attracted by the novelty of a home made cake because she very rarely has one.

How different that is from my own experience. With a brilliant grandmother who kept us supplied with home-made cake at all times, I would never miss an opportunity to eat the gaudiest shop bought cake I could find.
