Going with that 1911 Shirley has posted, I think the grandchild named Jessie Besley was actually born as Covell

JustJohn Report 21 Oct 2013 17:18

On 1911C in Murton, John, Fred and Mary Jane appear (youngest 3 of Robert and Elizabeth in 1901C)

They are "stepchildren" of Robert HINDMARSH (49, coal miner, b S Shields) and Elizabeth (51).

Robert' COVELL's wife Elizabeth was born in Prudhoe according to an earlier census. He was always born Worstead in Norfolk. Children were born in Tynemouth area (somewhere spelt Eardon and Eartdon)

No sign of an Elizabeth Jessie anything born in that time frame I can find. First sighting of her I can find in 1913 when she married MOULD. :-S :-S

Good spot, Rose.

Robert HINDMARSH (described with wife Elizabeth as step parents of John, Fred and Mary Jane - who were youngest 3 of 8 living children from 29 year marriage of Robert COVELL and Elizabeth in 1911C) had only been married 2 years to his wife Elizabeth (51 in C1911).

Thye were married in 1909 - her name at marriage was COVELL

Have looked at that Drury birth in Smallburgh in 1886. These are some of the DRURY births there:

Sidney 1885
Jessie Elizabeth 1886
Emily Jane 1888
Georgiana 1890

and here is family in 1891c in Witchfield, Worstead:

Robert COVELL, 41, ag lab
Sidney DRURY, son, 6
Lilly DRURY, 4 (may be Lizzy)
Emily DRURY, dau, 2.
Georgeanna DRURY, dau, 2,
Eliza DRURY, cousin, widow, 42, gen serv
Edith DRURY, lodger, 17, b Westwick, NFK
John DRURY, lodger, 2
All born Worstead except Edith

In C1901, family is at 7 Deuchar Terrace, Hirst, in north east somewhere:

Robert COVELL, 45, fireman & farmer
Eliza , wife, 46
Sydney, 17, coalminer
Eliza, 15
Emily, 13,
Georgie, 11
John, 12, coalminer
Philip, 8
Jane, 9

All born Worstead in Smallburgh Reg District - all surname COVELL.

And we already have 1911C in Back St, Cowpen Quay, Blyth (only 2 rooms) where Robert (62) and Elizabeth (60) claim to have bene married for 29 years and have had 9 children (8 surviving). Philip (17) and Jack (21) are living with them. Also Jessie BESLEY, 2, a grandchild born W Riding.

Plot thickens

In C1881 in Westwick

Eliza DRURY, head, widow, 31, on parish relief, B Worstead
Edith, dau, 7, b Westwick
Harriett, dau, 6, b Westwick
Herbert, son, 5, b Westwick

She appears to have been Eliza SELF (parents John SELF 1816-1890 and Elizabeth COVELL 1816-1891). Eliza was 3 months old in 1851C in Worstead and family is a typical local family. Eliza married Robert DRURY (1842-1879) in 1872.

So the mists for me are receding. All these DRURY children prior to 1879 were fathered by Robert DRURY, born Westwick. After 1881c, widow Eliza DRURY (nee SELF) had an arrangement with Robert COVELL, who probably was the father of the children born from 1883 to 1890 but was not married to widow Eliza.

They then got married in 1890 in north east, but Eliza is still using her maiden name in 1891C and children are still DRURY (probably local people had no idea they had got married up north). Thye have another child Philip (in wedlock presumably) and then move north as a family after 1894.

I think that is why, in 1911, Robert COVELL says he and cousin Eliza SELF have been married for 28 years and have had 9 children together.

QED? Possibly, Stanley :-)

JustJohn

JustJohn Report 21 Oct 2013 21:56

Stanley

The other Robert COVELL who was in Tynemouth in 1901C (also a coal miner, born 1851 Worstead) was son of George COVELL and Elizabeth HAYNE.

He seems to have moved nothert before 1871c and married Elizabeth HESLOP of Prudhoe in 1874. Dates were 1851-1902. Widow Elizabeth then married Robert HINDMARSH in 1909. Hence in 1911c, John, Fred and Mary Jane COVELL are stepchildren of Robert HINDMARSH.

So the two Roberts were probably related and knew each other. They were both born at roughly same time in same village. And both finished up in the same area of the north as coal miners. One Robert was son of George COVELL, other I think was son of Samuel COVELL.

But parents of your grandmother Elizabeth Jessie DRURY- COVELL should prove to be Robert COVELL and Eliza DRURY nee SELF when you check her 1886 birth certificate from Smallburgh. :-)

Thanks to Rose for finding that birth. Easy after that, I hope.
