Picking your brains. The tornado at Hayling Island made me think of this. By the way I hope you were not near enough to be affected.

When I was a child in the 40s and 50s, after the war, my Dad used to drive us to Hayling Island to the beach. It was really fine sand and used to be a sun trap. We always used to go home sunburnt and if it was windy the sand used to blow everywhere.

I have just been told that it is a stony beach. What happened to all that fine white sand? Was it eroded over the years? :-S

It's still there. There are several beaches on Hayling, but if you use Google Maps the one in the South-West corner is all sandy and you can see it quite clearly if you zoom in enough.

It hit Turk Town as well didn't it?

I don't know about Hayling beaches but would think that they would be different wherever you were on the island, probably becoming sandier as you went west because of the longshore drift from Selsey.

Might be completely wrong there.

Ann, Hayling beaches have change so much over the years, you are probably remembering when the part around Sandy Point was all sand , well they had to put stone/shingle to act as a sea defence and all the arcades / bingo and the cafes have all gone as well, in there place is flats and up the other end there is still a funfair but heard that might be going soon. We used love the sandy beaches on Hayling when the children were young.

I have never really been to the beach at Hayling because we had Selsey and Wittering beaches, Bracklesham being the one I most visited as a child. All pebbl.y

Thanks Mummo, I thought that may be the case. We never took our children there but I am remembering it as a child of about 7 to 12.
