My 3 year old grandson is literally 'tongue tied' - ie the piece of skin under the tongue holding it in place is a bit short. This is usually cut when the baby is very young. Daughter noticed it, but 'procedures' took so long, she didn't have the skin cut. This has resulted in the wee lad having speech problems. He knows what he's saying - but very few can understand him (his elder brother is also tongue tied, but only has a lisp).
Anyhoo, my daughter is a little bit pleased that, tonight, in the right context, and very clearly, he said to her:

'Mummy, stop being obnoxious' :-D

Which just goes to show, the spoken language may be a problem, but the understanding is spot on!! :-D :-D

Lol Maggie, what a lad :-D

I am also tongue tied but after tears of speech therapy no one has notice although I do have a slight difficultly with a few letters.

From years of visiting doctors, dentists etc for routine visits (not connected with being tongue tied) only one has picked up on my condition, and he gave me the fright of my life.

I was working in an outback town in WA when the school dentist visited from Perth. He was in a mobile dental clinic set up ,at the back of the Shire Offices. His first job was to round up all the shire staff for a routine inspection.

When it came to my turn he suddenly exclaimed "You're tongue tied!"

It's the only time I have answered with a grunt as my mouth was wide open at the time! :-D

It has never been a impediment for me :-)

Hi Allan,
The elder boy (aged 5) never needed speech therapy, but has the most cute lisp.
I'm sure half the problem the younger one has is trying to use words a 3 year old doesn't normally use - therefore causing even more misunderstanding!
He was a late talker, (could be because he's the youngest of 3) but makes up for it now, and obviously takes in all he hears.
He will be starting speech therapy in the next 6 months, but if what he said today is anything to go by, he seems to be sorting out how to form sounds on his own - well with a bit of help from his 11 year old sister who can understand him, and then over emphasises his own words and tries to make him repeat them until they're understandable.
She's the only one he will allow to comment on his pronunciation.
Mind you, he can say 'Granny, ice cream please' VERY clearly :-D
