Dogs and loud bangs

As we are coming up to Bonfire night (in the UK) I would like to ask if any dog owners out there have used the plug in calmers that are on the market ?
My pup (9yrs old now) is petrified of all bangs and she is getting worse. So bad that I am willing to try anything at any cost to stop her tucking her tail and legging it to the loo. (her hide place), as long as it works.
Even tho´Spain doesn´t have Bonfire night, they do have lots of reasons to use fireworks and bangs, but the English here will let off fireworks and I am dreading it for the pup.
So has anybody used anything that works please. :-(

Our dog has never been bothered by fireworks or helicopters which we get a lot of...........mind you she is quite deaf now at 16yrs old !

It's the cats we have to keep in.

lol Joy I wish I could put cotton wool in pups ears but she would never hear anything. She hates a lorry going over a road hump and the load banging, .....2 streets away !
Sadly Minx is now 9 and getting worse, I have tried the ignore but make sure she has a hidey place. She has so many hidey holes now.
I have tried cuddling her and confronting but confront what and how do you cuddle a bundle of quivering fluff (to be fair to me and her if I pick up as she often asks when out, she hugs me) when in she wants down and a hide place.
I am really at a loss with her as I have never had a dog this scared of noise.
It can´t be from a Pup as I have had her since she was 9weeks old. and my oldie although used to be iffy on noise has never been this bad and is now so chilled out she points her toes at the ceiling !

For those who know my mutts
*sighs*
I have decided to allow my mutts to be together at night. (I have spent years awake for Minx fits so fighting is no different). Mini loves her epi sis and wants to help her and they try to cuddle together, which I stop incase Minx fights.

So it´s time to let the mutts be themselves and be together. I just hope they remember the 1st 2 yrs of fun and the 2nd 2 yrs when they where friends.

No more shut doors, no more gates let my mutts look after themselves

I hope

Might be worth googling for reviews.

I remember the vet telling me when we had Chester that if I was going to use the plug in things they should be plugged in a couple of weeks before Firework time.I always forgot to do them in time :-S.Another thing I know they use in some Kennels for anxious or dogs scared of fireworks is Rescue Remedy drops.Just add a few drops in the water bowls.
It is awful when you have scared pets .I could never do anything to calm mine down once he heard the bangs etc.The last couple of years of his life though he was fine .I then realised it was because he was pretty deaf lol

Having always had gun dogs we have never had this problem.

I cannot suggest anything other than the thing we do whilst they are puppies.

Do not react yourself to loud noises, if you show anxiety the dog will sense it & think that they are in danger.

Well a week ago I bought the Pet Remedy plug in.
Minx is certainly calmer as in she now heads for the bedroom instead of the loo, and she sleeps better (even if it is in the wardrobe). Really load bangs still worry her and it´s unfortunate that we can´t guarantee when they are going to be let off.

Carole I know not to react and don´t where possible, not always easy when you are not expecting it , sadly Pup is now 9 ..where did the years go. and Mini is nearly 13.

I wish we had just a few days of bangs but alas not so here even a birthday can set off fireworks :-(

Some of those thunder flashes are really loud some dogs in Tenerife seem to be adjusted to them. Only heard a couple bark at the fireworks while we were there. I suppose some may be quivering and silent, We wouldn't know that. :-)

When I was a child our dog was fine in a thunderstorm or on bonfire night if he was in the car in the garage. Never quite worked out why? :-)

Be thankful that Diwali is on Sun 3 Nov this year - with a bit of luck, the associated firework displays will coincide with the Bonfire Night ones.

Just found this on a letter published by our County Police Force
...........
It’s illegal to buy or use ‘adult’ fireworks if you are under 18 (this does not include party
poppers or sparklers) and to throw or set off fireworks in public places
.
It is also illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night
(midnight) and New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year (1am)
........
It doesn't help those of us who live outside the UK, but of interest never the less.

We had fireworks set off at 1.45 this morning.

As usual our Rory (Westie) growls and barks to
let us know what is going on, bless him, we have to
assure him that we heard it and that its OK.

If you Google Dog noise dvds there are quite a few hits for de-sensitising dvds. I have known some people who have used them with success - but probably with younger dogs. Have you tried playing some low, calming music?

Our 10 year old bitch is also scared of most loud noises and, like yours, has a hidey-hole. We ignore her - sounds cruel but petting just re- enforces the fear. Strangely, although she is scared of fireworks, bag-pipes, vacuum cleaners, hair-dryers, doors banging, she isn't worried by really loud bangs like thunder or low-flying jets.

Hope Minx doesn't get too distressed.
