The Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a £50m project to be piloted in nine areas of England, under the scheme surgeries will be able to bid for funding to open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week.

Mr Cameron also promised as part of the project - more flexible access including consultations using the the online video calling social media programme Skype.

presumably if you don't have access to a computer or have Skype you make a drawing of yourself and send that in?

Very true Barb. We have to telephone for an appointment starting from 8 o'clock in the morning.
At our doctors practice (about 4/5 doctors) you have to phone on the day you want the appointment.

I once managed to get though after 7 minutes non stop calling, only to be told "sorry no more appointments we are now fully booked could you try again after 12:30... (Fully booked within 7 minutes??? the mind boggles)

A doctor can only see one patient at a time, so what the difference is using Skype going to make? ...its just a telephone with pictures. :-(

It must be a joke , no way would Skype be used for such like practices ,pardon the pun.
You can take covert piccies of the person you're talking to on Skype. without them suspecting.
Doesn`t sound very ethical , does it?

What they need is more receptionists on duty to answer the calls requesting an appointment. Mind you that would probably mean the appointments would all be filled in 1 minute instead of 7.

If the demand is great at certain times, then more medical staff are needed at these times instead of leaving it all to the patient to call back. Not easy when you should be on your way to work or looking after children/getting children to school.

As for a Skype consultation, not sure about that maybe in some circumstances.

I can remember when I got in trouble on here for having a virtual pub thread where GR members had to work out how to enter it.
Some darling little button pushers took umbrage cos they couldn`t see what was going on inside the thread. so they got me a months ban bless their little cotton socks.
Dontcha just love envy and spitefulness.
Those that figured how to get into that particular thread (and you were one of them) gave me a right ribbibng lol ,because I had created it but couldn`t remember how I did it or how to get back Into the said thread.
I had to be pm`d and told, cant remember who it was that pm`d me though. :-D :-D :-D

This system was considered for our local hospital... at weekends only.

Set up in local hospital, connecting with a larger hospital.

Nor surprisingly, it was not implemented.

OH was taken to the hospital emergency a few months ago............. not a good experience. Maybe a cyber doctor would have been better.
