The first charge against gt gt grandfather was larceny, wonder what he stole? he was an Ag Lab but my gt grandfather his son, was a Stone Mason and his son, my grandfather, was a Carpenter.

I have an Owen as well and Hiorns are in there too. Hoping a friend can find more of William's ancestors, I haven't gone any further back there, the Merrys are on my gt.gt. grandmother's side and I have them listed back to the 1500's with all the family branches as well, not just my direct line.

Liz ..............

no Merrys so far as I know .................. but my women were also mainly lace makers.

The men were Ag Labs, though there was one who was regularly caught for poaching, another who lived on the Parish, and one who was a Game Keeper ................ not sure if he ever caught the poacher :-D

Hi there Liz. Good luck at the dentist on Friday. I went to mine today and had a tooth out. It took her quite a bit of time as she had to cut back some of the jawbone to get the roots out. They were growing up near the sinus cavity. Now I am not having solid food for 24 hours and no hot drinks. I have to drink things through a straw on the other side of the mouth. My jaw feels as if somebody has punched it. And my wallet is considerably lighter. :-0

Elaine, glad you enjoyed the shopping spree but do take care of yourself too.

I actually did some Christmas shopping while at Westcroft and got some things for myself as well, including a brand new towelling dressing gown for after my bath/shower for £2.95 and some other bits and bobs I liked. Tesco had some good things reduced so they went in my basket too, some nice tins which I may put sweets or biscuits in for my elderly neighbours for Christmas or will use them for something else, three for £1 in a tall size, and two small cake tins in the same design for £1. I could have seriously overspent but had to make myself think twice about what I really wanted and what I could live with out lol

Thanks Elizabeth, I am more tired now I am back, I think I will need a few days to catch up with myself lol but will not push things. I have a dentist apptmt on Friday and am waiting to hear from the hospital about the eye problem my optician found, possibly Glaucoma.

Sylvia, do you have any Merrys in your tree, as my ancestors had that surname and they are dotted about the area of Gawcott and beyond. My gt.gt. grandmother was Ann Merry and it was she had to put up with gt.gt. grandfather William going to jail. No wonder she and her daughters were shown as lace makers, to supplement the family income no doubt. What a struggle it must have been for the family when he was jailed for two months and then a futher month the same year, bet his name was Mud!

I got some good photos of Buckingham and my coz, and of Les and Audrey, and some nice ones of my cousin's rabbit so will print those out for her as soon as o.h. gets some more photographic paper.

It seems so odd to think that if my grandmother had been nicer to my Mum when she moved to Gawcott with my Dad, I would have been brought up there instead of Norwich. Buckingham is a very nice town, I could happily spend a month or more there and not get fed up, and the villages around are so pretty.

I too am exhausted,mi leg is ok but as it was my day off I met my sister for a look around the flea market and charity shops. Well we have that in common Liz. I got into Barnsley at 9.30 am and usually my sister arrives a few minutes later on the train. However, today she was held up for 1.1/2 hours due to a cracked rail. We shopped 'til we dropped and I arrived home at 3.00pm. Believe you me, I am not as exhausted when at work. If it was Joyce on the answer phone it shows her brain is still ticking over, can't keep a determined lady down. Elaine. :-D

Thanks Elaine, I did get your message but too tired to reply and Sheila told me you were helping with updates.

There is a message on the ansa phone here which sounds like Joyce but no name, so will message her soon and see what she is up to, or speak with Sheila and find out the latest. You take care Elaine with that poorly knee, that you don't do too much.

Thanks kandj and Sylvia, my lot are all around Gawcott and beyond, will have to go back and do more visits to villages and graveyards.

I am so tired. I went to bed earlier than my usual times at my cousin's and got up about ten am every day but from the minute I put my nose outside the bedroom door it was non stop from her, I had to mend her plug in the basin as it had come off the chain, and do numerous other little jobs and take her shopping, not locally but to a shopping centre near Milton Keynes, except she forgot the way and we got quite lost at one point. Turned out it was nowhere near where she thought it was, she usually goes on the bus or her son takes her and as a non driver she had no idea of the route lol Thank goodness for taxi drivers, who directed me properly at last. I have just slept for over 12 hrs, hardly heard o.h. go to work at 1.30pm!

Coz is a hoader like me, her food cupboards groan with the things she likes, cakes and pastries expecially, and her wardrobes are full to overflowing with bargains and nice clothes, many of them still with labels on. Her loft is apparently the same, and as for bedding and such, she has enough to kit out a guesthouse, not a two bed bungalow lol Since she was poorly with food poisoning earlier this year, she has gone off the soaps she used to watch and doesn't have tv on much except to watch a bit of the bbc news channel and the shopping sites, she uses them a lot, and she bought three items on different occasions just while I was there! I bet she won't have worn them if I go back next year altho she did wear a bodywarmer that she got when we were looking in a charity shop, we share that interest. She had also bought me several elephant items as she knows I like them so I came back with a box of goodies and also a lovely pair of curtains 84" x 84" with elephants along the bottom hem. (charity shop bargain at a fiver, that she told me she had bought me a while back)

She has a pet rabbit that is cute and has the run of the fenced in garden by day, it ate all the clematis leaves that were left on a plant and chewed pretty much everything as well as the hay, dandelion leaves we picked in the churchyard and so on. A very indulged little creature but very sweet and gives her company and a reason to get up in the morning, (and chase around at night to get back in the hutch, several nights it slept in the garden as it wouldn't go in)

For someone of 76 with a pacemaker my cousin does very well, and looks after herself with the help of visits from her son, very well, and the way she stomped round the town each time we went in, you would never know her age or health problems. She wears trendy clothes and is small and slim, so doesn't look 76.

I just hope I have the stamina to drive myself back next year for another visit, I did find it tiring driving and navigating by myself but managed the drive safely and that's the main thing.

Welcome back, Liz

Glad you had a fun time.

My father's relations came form Buckinghamshire ................. the Preston Bissett, Edgcott area

They moved north for work in the late 1800s, but I gather there may still be a few around the area!

Liz, hope you got my message. I had been covering for two of the staff that were off and did not pick your message up for two days. However, I did phone Sheila and she has kept me up to date and I have been posting the info. As you will see, Dutch has been home for the weekend so Sheila was going to give them a little space. Elaine. :-)

Hi folks,

Just to say I am back safely, from my trip to Bucks. I stayed an extra couple of days so got back a few hours ago. The weather was lovely and I enjoyed getting to know my way round Buckingham and meeting a few more relatives.

One highlight was taking my cousin with me to visit the boy Les and his lovely Aud, saw their telegram from the Queen for their Diamond Wedding and was green with envy at their beautiful home and garden. Thanks to you both for the warm welcome and lovely sponge cake! Watch out Les, I will be back!

Les had found out that my Gt. Grandfather (we are linked through Audrey's tree) was in a spot of bother with the police, imprisoned for 2 months for larceny in July 1849 and then in trouble in December of the same year for obstructing a P.C. in his line of duty along with another family member and someone else too lol

Wonder if my Gran ever found out, she would have sniffed a bit at that!

I am off to stay with a cousin in Buckingham later today so off to bed in a mo, just wanted my friends to know why I wouldn't be about, so you don't all pm me lol
I should be back on Sunday unless I can persuade o.h. to manage without the car for longer, he's on nights this week and biking to and from work, good thing he has waterproofs lol

Take care everyone, Happy October!
