Those who work will be allowed to jump the queue for a council house in one city.
Would-be tenants with a job of more than 12 hours a week and voluntary workers will get priority in Stoke-on-Trent, along with members of the forces and foster carers.
The city council wants to reward those who demonstrate a ‘community contribution’.
Council house tenants helped draw up the proposed rules.

I think this is a good idea, what do you think?

Yes, but the law is that social housing must be also be allocated according to need.

Section 166A(12)
provides that authorities must have regard to their homelessness and
tenancy strategies when framing their allocation scheme.

What happens if that person loses their job? Do they lose their home?

A totally ridiculous idea, especially as Stoke is one of the places in the country where it is truly hard to find work!!!!

Again a soundbite by a Tory Minister to pander to the middle Englanders who believe that all those who are unemployed are Lazy!!!!!

Don't know why members of the forces get priority when there are MoD houses standing empty.

Taken from a local council's site

2.4. Classification of the Points System

Armed Services personnel living in Armed Services' quarters and who have notified the Council that, within six months, they will be required to vacate that accommodation due to retirement, early retirement due to ill health, normal discharge or redundancy will be awarded 25 points

There's a heck of a lot more, the part talking about the 'local' connection is

Residence in the area for six out of the last twelve months or three out of the last five years and/or
The applicant's employment is based in the borough and/or
The applicant has close family i.e. parents, children over 18 years, brothers or sisters, who have lived in the area for at least five years.

There have been articles in the past about other towns who also include volunteers who work in the area.
