Hi Kevin, if you`re referring to an old marriage record where only the wife`s first name is given.
Just enter, Unknown.

Sorry I should of said when you get the information from the census most of the time the wife appears as her partners name and if you can’t find a marriage you don’t get a maiden name so this can course a bloke.

Hi Kevin

If you post the details on the "Find Ancestors" board......members might be able to find a marriage for you.

Good luck......Prickles.

Put the mans name in the search box and the womans first name in as 'first name of spouse.

Have you tried variations of his name?

failing that....... give us some names and places :-D

There is also the chance they never married....in that case, if they had children you would need to purchase one of their birth certs

I usually use a woman's married name until I find her maiden name. When I started, I used "unknown" but ended up with loads of unknowns and quite a few had the same first name so very confusing!

Have you tried a death certificate it often contains maiden names

jax

jax Report 28 Sep 2013 17:34

I thought the maiden name (if known) was only on more recent death certs...not 100+ years ago

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Sep 2013 22:01

maiden name was not on English and Welsh death certificates

and I didn't know that they were on there now?

In any case, the information on a death certificate is only what the informant knows and can be very wrong!

The only information on a death certificate that you cane be sure is correct is the following ...............

date and place of death
cause of death
last know address of deceased (if different from place of death)
name and address of doctor and/or coroner
name, address and relationship of informant

Everything else is only what the deceased has told people .......... ie, hearsay

I'm not sure when it started, Sylvia, but my mother died in 1981 and her maiden name is on the certificate.

My mum died in 1961, and her maiden name is not on the certificate.
