Been a fan of tower PC,s since I first started in 2001. Had about 3 PC,s and the current one for about 6 plus years. Its loaded with Windows XP.

it being a bit temperamental now and did crash on me a few weeks ago when its power pack went . PANIC cos i do loads online including banking etc.

Granddaughter has a friend who is a games computer programmer and he looked at my PC a couple of weeks ago and tweaked it up and it is def faster now but he did say you need a new PC and would say sooner rather than later, also said fro how and what you use it for a lap top may suit you better .

So bit the bullet and ordered a new Dell laptop that arrived this morning . Aint setting it up tho will wait for the friend to do it for me ,including running it from the mains rather than its battery.

Quite exciting really

Watch this space lol

Oh you will be so pleased. I have had my Dell for a few years now and have found it far easier to use than the tower system and it takes up far less space!!

Good luck :-)

Noticed that you said you will be running it from the mains and not the battery. I always understood that all rechargeables should be charged then used, not kept plugged in all the time. The question came up this week whilst chatting to a friend when I was told the opposite.

Can anyone offer advice either way as my neighbour used to plug her laptop in all the time and now the battery is more or less useless.

...hope you enjoy your new Dell though.

Well my PC buff said you can run it from the mains its in the set up apparently and he will set it up so if I want to run it from its battery its a simple change over.

Wont know till next week when he comes to set it all up for me including loading my click free backup that has all my FTM info and documents and photos I have saved

Yes I agree the battery will eventually die if you keep using the mains

It's a good thing if you can alter the set up so that it can run from the mains.

My daughter warned me and her step dad that we should never keep our laptops constantly plugged otherwise it will damage the battery.

Hubby thinking he knew best took no notice. His laptop is permanently switched on using the mains even overnight. If he unplugs the laptop, his battery will now last only 5 minutes or so.

If you want to use the laptop plugged into the mains most of the time then it is best to take the battery out of the laptop altogether and then put it back into the machine every couple of months or so and let it run down and then re-charge before taking it out again. My son is a computer technician and always advises customers to do this if they are going to use the mains. As others have already said. the battery will die if left in the machine but not used regularly.
