What film has left a lasting impression with you, and for what reason?

Mine list would be ....

Vera Drake..... because for me it showed just how life was, and how it has changed for the better.

Dead Poets Society.....For all the emotions it brought out, and how one person can change others attitudes.

And the funny ones

Chuck & Larry.... For it's wonderful humour

Dirty rotten scoundrels.... ditto to above

The film that stays with my son is Jaws, because of that film, he hates the sea, so wish he hadn't of seen it all those years ago, I love the sea, sharks and all.

What's your "lasting impression" film?

Bambi - sobbed my ickle socks off :-( :-( :-(

ditto Dumbo :-( :-( :-(

Spartacus - never slept for nights after worrying about Jean Simmons and that poor little baby - how she held him up so he could touch the feet of Spartacus on the cross - OH and I both came out of the cinema awash with tears

Just thinking the same Wend - Dr Zhivago. :-D

It wasn't just the 'love' story, but the portrayal of the Russian Revolution, and the Cold. The sparkling frost and characters still wearing furs while indoors.

The other one, surprisingly, was Mama Mia. Although people may think it was shallow, and only a showcase for the Abba songs, Meryl Streep’s character Donna had followed her dreams. It made me reflect on how my life might have been if I’d followed mine. Missed or lost opportunities if you like.

I like to iron when watching a film Hayley, must be a woman thing :-D

Was it Omar that did it for you Wend ;-)

I balled my eyes out at Spartacus Ann, as did my friends, I think it was probably the first grown up film I saw. I can't remember what rating it had, but know that you couldn't go in without an adult, so as we done then, we asked an adult to take us in, now that is scary, but it was the done thing then.
The only thing my Mum said about going to the cinema was, if you ask an adult to take you in, only ask a couple, and when you sat down, make sure you didn't sit next to a man n his own, and if a man sat next to you, change seats, never asked why, but always did what my Mum said:-D

The film that I still remember was one which I saw when I was only about 9 or 10 years old. It was about a young boy who had a sick donkey and he walked all the way from his home to the Vatican with the sick donkey to ask the Pope to help cure his donkey - some 60 years on although I still remember the film, the name of it eludes me.

It was indeed Omar Lynda, but everything Det said too. A truly beautiful film and so poignant. I wept buckets at the end.

Det, I loved Mama Mia too, saw it 3 times, loved it for its unashamed naffness, a real feel good film. But I admit to tears falling when Meryl Streep sang Slipping Through My Fingers, to her daughter, so poignant.

Talking of Love Story's, I also sobbed through Love Story, with Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw, too sad, but lovely just the same :-D

Thought it would be Wend :-D

Hope Det has found your film for you OFiTG :-D

anyone ever see "The Yearling"? Gregory Peck and Claud Jarman Jr - all about a young deer - another tear jerker of mammoth proportions

The Blue Bird, when I was about 10. I had the book (actually a play) but the film wasn't the same. It had a terrifying forest fire in it, which gave my younger cousin nightmares for months.

I have just googled it and it says it was highly embellished and was made as a vehicle for Shirley Temple when she didn't get The Wizard of Oz. It was a box-office flop!!

'Dead Poet's Society' definitely up there,

One that does stand out, I have only ever seen part of, 'The Big Parade' by King Vidor, it is a silent film made 1925, about an American soldier going to fight in WW1. I got so wrapped up in it. Without words it conveyed so much feeling.

Found the name of the film based on the book

1951 childrens film 'Never Take No For An Answer'.

A discussion about it here

Unfortunately, it seems to be 'lost' as far as copies on DVD are concerned.

Yes I also agree with sentiments of Dead Poet's Society.

Schindlers List was another that left a deep impression and also the James Stewart film It's a Wonderful Life.............. never fail to watch this and feel cheated if it is missed off Christmas/New Year viewing.

Amistad which I watched again this week. Absolutely recommended viewing if you want to know more about slavery but from an entirely different context.

The Green Mile for obvious reasons.

Zulu my all time favourite, I must have seen it over 40 times.

ET...it's not just a kids' film ;-)

Young Frankenstein, Springtime for Hitler (The Producers), Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs. My son and I know the scripts back to front...lolol
