I wouldn't be too critical when banks and c card companies change or add new security arrangements, after all they are only responding to the criticism that they aren't doing enough to stop fraud. I have noticed recently that a number are making changes of one sort or another.
On the question of joint accounts, if you have a true joint account then you are of equal status, have equal rights to any credit balances and have joint and several liability to any debts incurred.
Many 'joint' accounts aren't actually joint accounts, they are sole accounts with additional authorised users. I had this arrangement with my son's bank account many years ago when he needed help with managing his affairs. Whilst I could withdraw funds and make transfers, I couldn't change anything to do with security, or change address, for example, it had to be him.
I believe all credit cards work this way, they are not joint accounts.

I always ague if someone phones me up and then insists that I verify who I am. They phoned ME how am I supposed to know who they are!
Re Banks - our local branch was closed - it takes two hours round trip by bus ( hourly bus) then we get an automated questionnaire on the phone. No where to state that is was not you that visited the bank. There are three of us in our house! ( Maybe we should say the wait was hours and hours!)

I forgot to say....
When OH phoned the bank this morning, they asked for info so they could make sure he was who he said he was........ full name, date of birth, address etc..... then to REALLY make sure, they asked what we paid by direct debit! They had to wait for a while, because he was going through the file cabinet.
It's nice to know they are serious about security, but sometimes it gets bl**dy ridiculous!

When they try to verify me (not Fashion World, as I buy all my fashion at Dolce and Gabbana and Home Bargains) I now have a short list of questions to verify them:
1. Name 2. Telephone number (it seems to say "Number Withheld" on my visual display) 3. Date of birth

Det - I wasn't asked for a password, they wanted information provided by our bank, on my husband's credit card, not mine, even though both cards are for the same account. The whole thing was a messup from the Aussie side - the NatBank.
:-(
We get "courtesy calls" from the bank every few months.
They ALWAYS ask to speak to Himself.
I say who I am, and they still insisted on talking to him.
When they finally got to talk to OH, he gave them a serve, asked why they wouldn't talk to me......... silence for a while......... then they asked if it was OK with him!!!
I keep asking........ what century do the bank people think we are in?
:-P
Scotland's People is run by BrightSolid, same as GR............ I guess I'll be going through the same rigmarole next time ( ? ) I renew.

Fashion World used to ring me up to try to get me to buy more from them and, before they would tell me about the wonderful offer they had, bale of cheap towels, plastic soap dish, piece of cheap jewellery, they would want me to verify who I was.
I would ask if it was something to do with the bill, which I knew had been paid, and they wouldn't tell me until I had gone through all the details so I would tell them they had better write to me.
They don't seem to call me much now. Oh how I miss them!

I wonder how many of us use our partners debit card or credit card when shopping on line or for real.
If you know 4 digit code, it goes through automatically. If it was checked by someone who thought I did not look like a lady, I would just say "oh, I picked up the wrong card"
This "not speaking to you, you are not account holder" is so ridiculous. Time we had a system where we can put our trusted loved ones on a data base so phone companies can speak to anyone in household nominated. Don't think I have anything to hide - goes to check~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As my husband was already living in this house 40 years ago when I moved in with him, the water bill is in his name, everything else is Mr & Mrs. I had not been into town so the first one had not been paid, when the red bill came in, instead of driving 12 miles to the nearest bank I decided to pay it over the phone. I was a bit wary of doing automated bill pay so decided to wait for a living person to come on.
“I wish to pay our water bill” “Are you the account holder?” “No, it is in my husband’s name” “Is he there?” “No, I wish to pay it with my card” “You cannot do that” “Why not?” “Because the account is in his name” “What difference does that make, it’s just a different initial, same address” “I can only tell the account holder how much the bill is for” “I know how much, because I have the bill here, that is how I know the account number” “You still cannot pay it, he has to give his consent”... phone put down on me!
I rang back & did it on the automated bill pay ... (using my card)

Ah! I've just twigged what was going on!!
In the UK, there is an added layer of security linked to credit and debit cards called 'Visa Verification' which ScotlandsPeople have obviously signed up for.
When the prompt box came up, it should have recognised that your card hadn't been registered by the system and ask you to register it.
From memory, you have to choose your own password then on subsequent occasions, it asks you to enter the say 3rd, 6th and 7th digits/numbers. It can be a bit off a faff if it doesn't recogise your entry in which case you have to opt to change the password on line.
The system ought to recognise that there are two different named people using the same acount number. OH and I have different passwords when it's a joint CC or DC even if the other is the Principal. The problem probably came about because Scozz's was issued by an 'overseas' account.

OH came home.
Got onto Scotlands People website, used OH's credit card No......
and....... it was rejected!
OH 'Phoned the bank (the number on the back of the credit card) and was told he would have to speak to a credit card person.... what?
We had to work with them...... OH passing info on to me while using SP website, tried all sorts of things before it worked. This took about twenty minutes.
Then asked how I would pay for items when the website asked this "new" security question....... you'll have to use your husband's credit card.
They will NOT issue me a new card with a bank ID No.
There are going to be a lot of wives annoyed about this.
I am LIVID!
OH is Primary....... I guess that makes me Secondary? Second-Class??
:-P :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P

Tec .............. our credit card companies work a little differently.
OH and I have a joint cc account where OH is the principal
I got a phone call about 2/3 years ago ............... had I been out of this province without telling them?
No
Then my card had been used in Quebec.
Would I please destroy my card, and they would make the necessary corrections so we would not be charged for the purchases.
So ................... I got a new card in the mail, with slightly different last 4 numbers
OH's card was not replaced.
Now .............. that account comes in with my card action listed first, even though it is shown as Card 2

I had fun and games when I lost a credit card. OH is the principal on that one.
Although they 'stopped' both cards, they'd only send out replacement ones after they'd spoken to him.
Like you, I'm the one who pays those bills........out of my SINGLE named bank account!

I had the same with my daughters mobile phone that she got last week.
The contract is in my name but she lives 60 miles away. It needed to be activated so she could use it.
She had all my private info for any questions they asked...mmn, my maiden name, address, dob ect...but would not accept it from her....it had to be me.
Next time she will have to get an older woman to make the call for her as they sussed her out......but even after I called them....how did they know it was me??

Scozz ..................
it isn't only banks!
I had a run-in with our natural gas provider a few weeks ago.
We've had the same sort of account since we moved into this house in 1972. A different company took it over from the original providers about 5 years ago, but nothing else changed.
The account is in OH's name, but I've paid all the bills for over 20 years.
I got a phone call one afternoon, could they speak to Mr xxxxxxx
I'm sorry he's not in, can I answer your question
NO
My name was not on the list of "approved" people to whom information on the account could be given.
I kinda blew my top :-D
eventually got a phone number from them that OH could phone .................
I phoned him at his office, and he got through on that number .................. but to another office in a town about 500 km away (still in the same province though) :-S
Anyway, he added me to the "approved" list, and found out what so important that no-one else could be told ................................
they were changing their billing date, and therefore the due date for payment was also changing
the change ...................... 4 days later that currently.
OH couldn't stop giggling when he told me that!!

I'm not impressed!!
:-P
I'm cheesed off!
I haven't bought points at Scotland's People for months, tried to buy some this morning.
A new page appeared...... asking for my ID. Huh?
I then called my bank.......... who explained that some websites are now using extra security when customers use a credit card.
OK, but what is my ID? I don't have one.
Only the PRINCIPAL holder of the card (ie my OH) has an ID... I will only get one when HE gives the authorisation!
We've always had joint accounts, everything is in both names.
I now have to wait for Himself to get home, so that he can 'phone the bank.
:-P
What century do the bank think this is??
