We were in the paper shop this mornings. Two woman in front of us were talking, one said that she had left her teenage daughter at home "crying her eyes up" I looked at OH confused as I had not heard this before he , said it is a local expression.

We certainly seem have some strange expressions.

First heard it when I lived in Cumbria. They have a lot of funny sayings there.

I have just thought of one my Mother often used if someone was hanging about. "Standing like a stick of celery waiting for a frost"

In Yorkshire we use the same expression mentioned by AnnC...... crying your eyes out...... or even.....laughing your head off. Now there's a scarey thought!!

I was in the depths of Welsh Wales this afternoon. This lady said have you got a torch. I said "Right here in my little donny". She looked rather bemused and I had to admit I was revealing my roots in the Black Country.

Have not used that expression for 50 years!! Donny is "hand". Where did that word come from originally. Why did I blurt it out today?
