I am having to use a computer in an internet cafe as my dial up modem was fried in a thunderstorm 4 days ago. I hope to get a new modem tomorrow.

Withdrawal symptoms were bad, Scozz. At least I am now back. Guess who will be spending several hours on the internet.

I am 'surfing' on a wing and a prayer as the lead to my modem to phone socket has wires hanging out. Luckily Sky are sending me a new one.

The reason I am getting a new one from Sky and not going to buy one from PC World etc., is that they will not recognise any problems if I do not use the leads they provide.

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 29 Aug 2013 15:14

Do you mean they cannot "see" the problems or they refuse to do anything?

Sky do not do dial up modems.

They have a nasty policy of forcing customers to fork out for tv boxes and ADSL "modems" whereas others supply them for free ( with a bit of push ) and replace any faulty kit for free.

If the box has burned out there is a serious fault somewhere and you should get a proper check of your power supply sockets. Also a BT OpenReach engineer should checkout the ADSL master phone socket. I have had hundreds of routers under my control and not one of them has ever self combusted.

Sky support demands that you use a Sky modem. However a third party one will work perfectly well and can be found on eBay for £ 20. You can also get real Sky kit for not much eg
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sagemcom-Sky-Wireless-Broadband-Router-Modem-/281153929434?pt=UK_Computing_Wireless_Routers&hash=item41761480da

The best emergency internet is a USB data key from "3" or EE etc. not 0845 steam dial-up which is very slow (56K max) and costs the earth. Most smartphones can also be used as modems ("tethering") but check your contract first or you could get a large bill.

Nobody said Sky did do a dial up modem

Errol, the original poster said "my dial up modem was fried in a thunderstorm" and that "luckily, Sky are sending me a new one".

Possibly this:

Quite a nice bit of kit really.

Where did they say Sky were sending them a new one?

I must be losing it in my old age because I cannot see it. Or maybe my poor eyesight is starting to fail.

Errol, unfortunately broadband is too patchy where I live. My nephew did try for me, but said it just wasn't worth it.

Rollo, I was the original poster who said my modem was fried. No way did I mention Sky. I am in hill country here in NZ. I cant even get a signal on my cell phone so don't leave it turned on unless I go to town, otherwise the battery goes flat trying to find a connection, and even in town I don't turn it on unless I want to make a call, or I know somebody wants to ring me. I really am deprived. (Yes, I spelled that correctly).

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 29 Aug 2013 23:28

Some may think that you would find it frustrating but I reckon you are one of the lucky ones!
Is it all running correctly for you now?

Huia

Huia Report 29 Aug 2013 23:36

Apart from the fact that the computer seems very slow, yes, but my son says the computer where he works is also running slowly, so maybe it is just the cold wet winter weather making them slow! I did have trouble getting into GR earlier and I hadn't managed to get into FB at all so I will have to go and have another try. I know there are some messages for me.
