I wanted to clear up the date of the death of a family member. When I searched the documents I found the date was one year out. How can I get it changed to the correct year?
I wonder if anyone can help me out?

Hi Frances

Are you looking to put in the correct date on your family tree?

Hi Sue,

No, I already did that as I know the correct year. But I am worried that anyone trying to identify my family member may think that it is the wrong person. Perhaps I am being too fussy, but I like to think that all details are put down correctly so as not to throw someone off.
So, I wish to find out how to correct the documents which have been mistyped in copying from a death certificate. Unless I am confusing the register date and the date of death. Hmmm. I never thought of that. I am new to all this.

can you give some details and we can take a look

The registration date is not going to be the date of death....that can only be found on the death cert it self or on a probate record

Did they die at the end of one year and death registered at the beginning of the following year?

Hi Jax,
Thank you for your reply. I checked the information. Yes, they died in one year (Nov) and were registered the next (Jan, I think). There is a mistake on the date of death as it stands on Genes Reunited historical documents.
I can give you any information you need, or you can be a contact and take a look for yourself. I would be grateful for any help.

Do you have the actual death cert .that will give the actual date.

It may be the death was reg after a coroners inquest and you are seeing the deaths registration not the actual death date

Or is it the birth date that s wrong on the cert? The info on any cert is only as the informant thought they knew

Hi Shirley,

I do not have the death certificate, but I know for sure the year and the month and week, even the probably day of death (it was overnight). I downloaded the death information from Genes Reunited's own archives, and I put it in my keepsake and noted on my family information on that relative, that the death is wrongly given as 1988 instead of 1987.
The reason I am a bit worried is that there is a man with very similar information (name, area, university, birth year, and possibly same middle name too) and the only significant pointer of the difference is going to be the year of death, so let's get it right, I am thinking!
Thanks for your interest and any help you can give.

If you haven't bought the cert then how are are you to know if its the right person?

If the death was late 1987 but there was an inquest then the death would be recorded after the inquest and the informant would be the coroner and could well come into the new year.

The registration of a death is not necessarily the actual death date or even the same qtr

As an example although its a birth my dad was born in dec 1907 his mum reg his birth in Jan 1908 so looking up his records his birth shows as mar qtr 1908

His birth cert though shows his actual birth date of late dec1907

So the GRO Records are not when an event occurred but when they were registered

Thanks, Shirley. I have to admit I know next to nothing about all this. There was an inquest. That would explain it.
