It seems that I am stuck with them.

I tried deleting them but it says 'Carol Paine' is an invalid board name :-S

Why delete them, Carol, they are fun and unique! :-D

it's a nice board name - don't change it

I think that spaces are not allowed so CarolPaine should work.
I do not use the boardname option but instead leave it blank.

GR's tinkling changed my name a couple of years ago to add the underscore at the end.

If I try to change it to the original the system says name already in use.
Of course it is - by me!

GR were not interested and never replied to me so I could return to Barry.

Merely out of curiosity I found ? , † and ? in MSWord(2007) Symbols.

The heart and cross/crucifix I can understand. But what does the other symbol stand for?

Might you get away with "Barry "? (ie spacebar)

When I cut&pasted from Word all three symbols were in Preview. But after Submit I now see 2 x ?

Board names are not just random characters inside a piece of text but rather distinct data fields and as such should not contain anything which could be used as database control or page formatting characters.

Spaces, non-printable characters and certain non-alpha numeric symbols and character codes were excluded a few years ago as some had been causing problems.

I can remember several members also lobbying for Board names to be made unique too.

If you leave it blank, I believe the system uses whatever you have entered as your First name. Perhaps Thelma or someone who hasn't entered a Board name can confirm that is the case.

I've had the name of next door's dead cat for ages - see above - and I can't shift it. It says I'm invalid too.

Go into "ACCOUNT" and you have option Use board name when sending messages? YES/NO.
No will use the entry for your first name.

My board name is still two words. I entered both words with the space in between in the field that says first name . I left everything else blank

The reason you have a space is probably because you entered it as your First name. Your Board name is, presumably, blank?

I would also add that if you have invalid board name characters, whenever you attempt to update any other info on your account it will not be saved until you correct your board name as well.
