I love all the fifties, sixties and seventies stuff - they last - that's why they come up so often on advertisments - they'll never die - the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Pat Boone, Elvis, Beatles, Roy Orbison, Matt Monroe, Eddie Fisher, Patsy Cline, Mel Torme, Beach Boys, Queen, Neil Sedaka, Glenn Campbell, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Doris Day, Glenn Miller, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Dean Martin, and on and on and on :-D

Amazing really what Formby got away with nearly 100 years ago. Errol's lovely comments have reminded me that Presley, Cliff Richard and that generation were the ones castigated by some religious groups for bringing devil worship into music :-)

My grandma used to think Elvis Presley was wonderful, but Adam Faith wore a leather jacket on Sunday Night at London Palladium. Shocking.

Just goes to show that we are all different with different thresholds of shock and horror. :-) ;-)

In her little tent a Russian fortune teller
Reads your character and reads it true
She can tell you all your past and present
And the kids you're having in the future too

She's all rightski
Sitting in the darkski there
You don't mindski
What'll happen you don't care.

If you pay a bob then she
Will unveil a mystery
And you'll see much more
Than you did before
Of the Russian gypsy queen.
("Madame Moskovitch" A tribute to the evangelist of fun, George Formby - with a ukele, a unique smile, a giggle and a wink. And the most immaculate timing) :-D :-D :-D

Thanks for those replies. Very interesting.
Speaking of George Formby, I helped to police his funeral.
Off for a day or to so cannot reply further.

Best wishes Happy days

Oh and I grew up with music from the 70's and 80's, but our children, from the 90's always liked their own modern stuff.....( which we actually quite like)

Then along came Glee with all the older cover versions, and our worlds collided.
Having heard the covers, they buy the originals ( i tunes)

NONE of us have ever had any interest in Country Music, that is... until the TV series Nashville.
We now have both of the albums, which play on repeat!

I love all the old standards...Gershwin,Irving Berlin, etc etc....so do my children as they were brought up with this music...and Dixieland jazz all around them as their father and myself are musicians.
Not sure what my grandchildren like, but I like all music except the loud shouting they seem to favour today and the way they have the mike right up to their mouths and distort the notes.
Frank Sinatra is my favourite ballad singer, though I do find Bing a very relaxed crooner...Michael Buble is quite a good Sinatra style singer these days.

I love Formby and just find it amusing that people do not realise occasionally what the innuendo was - that's all.

George Formby was well known for his innuendo - he was a comedian rather than a singer

All the pop idols from whatever era had their faults Errol. Including all those named on here..... not just George Formby , so why did you single out just this named artist?

Should Christians like George Formby with all the sexual connotations and innuendo?

Just a thought

Harry. I have always been a big fan of George Formby. I think I can sing most of his ditties off by heart. And I was born 1946 so was a teenager at the time of all that wonderful music of MoTown, Beach Boys, Beatles, Bobby Vee etc. Yet I think George Formby has always been my favourite (though probably not admitted it before)

Now my son is same. He was born 1985 and he loves Carpenters, Queen, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, T-Rex. :-) :-)

Bing was in a trio with two brothers Bong and Beh (made that up)

Dear Mr Harry

Hello

Hope you are okay.

Where I live, a lot the youngsters like looking at old LP's and records
in charity shops.

They are discovering a wider range of music.

Perry Como, Roy Orbison, Frankie Laine and a lot of the 60's classics.

Some of them even say they wanted to listen to 1980's music!!

Good music and singing stands the test of time.

Take gentle care
Lots of good wishes to you.
Elizabeth, EOS

I love it when old songs of our youth are revamped and youngsters look amazed that we know all the words before they do.

:-D :-D

His proper name was Harry, and he was the 4th of 7 children.

My 50 year-old son is very keen on all the latest pop, and plays it all the time. He probably knows as much as, or more than, his children.

Me, I prefer the older stuff - like Bing.
