So looks as though he was born in Gloucester itself then so not South Gloucester. You could contact the Record Office in Gloucester I believe they are very helpful although not had to use them myself, not got anyone born in Gloucester.

Here are the three children that died I searched from 1906 -1920 these are all that came up

Maybe he was adopted as they had three children that had died in the last 5 years

On the 1911 image, there were 3 children born but sadly all 3 had died

Maybe he was registered as James??

Have you tried to find Samuel James Barnes & Alice Maude in the 1911 census.
Robert Edward was born about 4 months later so may give you a clue to area.

Just a tip on Gloucestershire Karen. Where in Gloucestershire did he die/was he buried?

The reason I ask is that Gloucestershire is split in two. anyone born in South gloucestershire will come under the record office for S Glos which is not Gloucester record office. I think it is Bristol.

Please can anyone help I am trying to locate the birth details of my grandfather his name was Robert Edward Barnes dob 05/09/1911 he died in 1989 in Gloucester his fathers name was Samuel James Barnes and mother was Alice Maude Marriott. I can find information on his parents but I cannot find a birth record anywhere!!! :-(
I am not 100% sure of his birth place could be Gloucestershire and surrounding areas or Somerset maybe..

I would be extremely grateful if someone could help !! :-D
