British Birth in Spain

Hi folks new to this but wondering if somebody may be able to help. Looking for my natural father but for years have never been able to find a birth certificate in Scotland. Today for some reason I find myself on here and may have tracked down a brother. This brother died in Glasgow and I am going to check details on his death certificate. However it shows on his birth details he was born in Spain. Looks like the mother was in the military, but why would she have had the baby in Spain in 1944?? The war was still on-bizarre!
The link I have to my natural father is that a few years later there is a birth registered at Andover. (military base hopefully) I'm hoping the eldest moved to Scotland in the 60's and the brother visited and hey presto I came about. How can I view actual English certificates?
Any help, thank you so much.

I don't know of any site where you can view a cert., there are several sites where you can find details/ref no. of a birth, and then send for the cert. at the link below - Liz

Hi Barbara, welcome to GR,

Unfortunately the England/Wales birth, marriage, death certificates are not available to view like the Scottish Register entries which are not only easily available but also offer the information you want, immediately.

It doesn't work like that for England&Wales. You have to look for the Birth Marriage or Death in the indexes (ie at freebmd.org.uk) . This is the index of all the BMD registrations, and not images of the certificates themselves.
Then, as Liz said, once you have located the right entry, use that reference info when you order the certificate (at £9.25 each!) from the GRO.

However, here on GR is the right place to ask questions!
May I suggest you use either the Find Living Relatives board or the Genealogy Chat because it's on those boards where you'll find help from GR members, there's always someone who seems to know just what your'e looking for, and if you can't get to grips with using the indexes, then just ask away :-)
