I know we have been experiencing getting the Error sign getting into GR but have been trying all night to get into my tree but keep getting the following:
"404 File or Directory not found" ......... Anyone else getting this message or know what it means :-S

Nolls I had it last night, tried again a bit later on and it was ok again.

it is probably a GR internal server error.

It often happens if web pages are either typed incorrectly or the website owners have moved pages around and not updated the link correctly although there are many other reasons for it occurring.

Quite often you can correct it by simply refreshing the page - press F5

That happened to me several times yesterday - when this happens, or when I get the other usual error messages - I cannot be bothered with the hassle of trying to get in so I just leave the UK site and log on to the NZ site, cuts down on a lot of stress ;-)

Nolls from Harrogate - it was another member who gave me that tip, none of these sites appear to be plagued with the usual error messages - Genes Reunited New Zealand, Genes Reunited Australia, and Genes Reunited South Africa :-S

When Genes Reunited UK starts playing up I ditch it and log on to one of them - stops me tearing my hair out ;-)

There is only one GenesRU site they do not have any servers in NZ OZ or anywhere else except UK. As most of the advertising is UK based using the NZ etc suffixes simply removes much of the google ad links via unamis (Orange).

It should be possible from this to work out that the reason for a lot of the delay errors is not the GRU site per se but waiting for the ad server. There are neater ways to block the ad server than resorting to "other sites".

The GRU site itself has been developed using AJAX. Older versions of InternetExplorer ( especially 7, 8 ) do not deal with AJAX sites at all well and timeout errors are a typical feature.

If you are using XP upgrading to a later version of IE is not possible.

The options then are either (a) use a modern browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera or (b) upgrade Windows to Version 7 or 8.1. Option (b) may be expensive.

Some sites eg BBC do not mind lashing out the cash to support IE7 and IE8. Others do including GenesRU.

Most ( not all ) computers more than 5 years old cannot run Windows 7 or 8 and even if they can getting device drivers for the computer itself and older peripherals ( e.g. scanner ) next to impossible.

One option for older computers is to dump Windows all together and install Linux which these days is ez to install and user friendly. The best user version currently is Linux Mint (free).

In a word if you are running XP then forget all about Internet Explorer. IE8 is a dead man walking, zombie software.

Instead use any of Chrome, Firefox, Opera. Currently Opera is best, GenesRu target Chrome. Most people used to IE find Chrome a bit of a shock, Firefox & Opera are easier ponce the menu bars have been turned on.

I recently posted on Suggestions how to disable the ad engine on GRU.
