Here here Ann, hit them in the pocket, where it really matters, in their mind

Good to see some of their advertisers are pulling out. Maybe that is the way to get them to do something about the anonymity.

Guin, couldn't agree more about the media.

Also Grace, I do agree with the term 'spineless' in respect of your average bully.

Post code gangs are another matter, they tend to stick to 'killing' other gang members from different post codes. Taunting kids on social media is not their ‘MO’ they are into organised crime, drugs, guns etc. Live by the sword, die by the sword

I live in one of the safest cities on Europe, I wouldn't want to live at the east side though. Monthly shootings, stabbings, committed by post code gangs.

The general 'playground' bully is an age old issue. I regard these individuals as 'spineless' Stand up to them when they are alone and they are quivering wrecks

There has to be a way to moderate social networking sites, a way to identify users who are committing criminal acts? I'm not sure of the answer to this as I'm not an expert, but surely something can be done?

The police seem to be able to track down other kinds of gang members using social media, so why not 'bullies' Maybe moderators of these sites should be forced by law to report issues such as bullying to the police?

I think some people are being very unfair on the girl being interviewed.

Firstly, the interview was edited so we don't know what else she said.

Secondly, some of the remarks addressed to the poor girl who killed herself were saying she was ugly. The interviewed girl was saying that she wasn't ugly so it wasn't true.

Thirdly, we don't know what question she was asked that led to that response. Journalists are very good at asking leading questions.

And fourthly she was a child and maybe not yet very good at articulating her thoughts.

Sorry Rollo I don't understand the point you are making.

What do you mean by a serious talking to? I didn't say that. What I menat for instance was in one case a group of people (complete starngers) posted awful comments on a fb tribute page about a young boy who had died. They did not know him but saw fit to pass comment on his appearance etc, really hurtful things.

When they were tracked down and approached for comment they were all 1: shocked to be found out, 2: denied that they had meant their comments the way they had come across or 3 couldn't care less. None were willing to face the family of the boy who had died..they could not face them in person...that is what I meant by spineless, maybe you mean something different when you use that term? (Spineless here means having no personal courage, honour etc)...

Nasty creatures they are indeed..

" I just meant that often when these people are confronted they end up being completely spineless people who are only brave "onscreen so to speak".

Would that it was so.

Some London schools are pretty well under the cosh of post code gangs who have also taken over the school's computer systems. A " serious talking to " would at best result in some relatively polite response such as " r u having a larf, r u serious " to damage. Nasty they are spineless far from it.

Hi Rollo, yes I am aware that both physical and on line bullying is rife, I just meant that often when these people are confronted they end up being completely spineless people who are only brave "onscreen so to speak". It was just my opinion based on what I see in my own country, on media etc, where a number of similar occurrences have taken place.

All bullying is terrible and has such ramifications, as such there should be much tougher consequences when tragedies like this occur... I don't know how these people live with themselves to be honest... :-(

RolloTheRed Report 7 Aug 2013 14:44

fwiw I know some of the associates of these people in France.
Among other key earners are shipping in girls from the Baltic republics who work at lap dancing clubs etc, assorted web sites and so on and so forth.

Money is paid in the right places to the right people and they all get rich.

The idea that in some way such sites could be closed down by the Daily Mail and the Dave is risable. In any case there are very much worse net sites than the one subject to the current fuss.

Parents are just going to have to get used to the idea of keeping some kind of grip on who their sons and daughters hang out with on the net. Being technically dumb or expecting the ISP / UKGov to do the heavy lifting is naive.

I see that the site where a lot of this kind of bullying is coming from is situated in Latvia and it is said that the bosses there are reluctant to do anything about the bullies as they are scared of losing customers resulting in the loss of advertising worth over £5m could put up the site here but no doubt be RR'd ....and this is adults running the site ..Shame on them if they don't do anything about it

"People are very willing to bully and confront anyone because they are not "physically there", I bet if they were right in front of them they would not dare to be half as mouthy."

Unfortunately physical bullying , taunting mixed in with sms and "social" network terrorism is rife especially with girls.

AmazingGrace08 Report 7 Aug 2013 02:12

It is very sad and is so unfortunately common place now.

People are very willing to bully and confront anyone because they are not "physically there", I bet if they were right in front of them they would not dare to be half as mouthy.

Maybe one day all countries will introduce laws to deal with these cyber trolls who do not appreciate the consequences (intended or otherwise) to someone else.

Poor young girl, I hope she is at peace now.

This young girl was my Nephew(in law's) niece. His Sister's daughter. He has had no contact for many years but it has come as a dreadful shock.
My heart goes out to Hannah's sister who found her and her family <3,and SHAME on those who post such hideous posts on these 'chat sites' or whatever they are.
I had seen this story on the news today but had no idea who this poor young girl was until my Sister rang me to say it was her son in laws Niece :-( :-(

Gee Report 6 Aug 2013 21:12

OK, I get you and in a fashion, I agree

Let's not forget, a girl took her life and 'bullies' helped her along that 'path'

I was commenting on the 'nasty' remarks on her death, how could people do that?

Don't know what words are best to describe them, sadistic is one.

Why/what do people get out of doing this sort of thing? are they on drugs/drink or just plan vile. l wonder what kind of background they come from. l just hope they are caught and dealt with asap. There must be ways of find out who they are??

Sue ....l saw the interview and must admit to hearing the same words, in fact its stuck in my brain and l've gone over it a number of times.

RIP Hannah...xx

It just struck me that the friend's comment might have been different if the girl wasn't so pretty.

I'm probably over analysing, I was at an all girls school of 600 in the early 60s, and I do know all about girls that didn't fit in. I believe it's 100 times worse now, I guess because of the internet.

Shame the poor girl couldn't tell someone.

Porkie_Pie Report 6 Aug 2013 20:22

I saw the same interview as Sue and that was also my first thought,

To me for the girl to says "there was no reason to bully her, she was a pretty girl" makes me wonder about the mind set of the girl being interviewed because she associated bullying with how pretty or not the victim was

It's kids, being kids....but some are 'vile'

Sue I'm sure that you must be aware that Girls especially are targeted , by their associates for being

slow developing/ over developed
skinny/ fat
clever/ not so clever
quiet/ extravert
popular/unpopular
pretty/ not so pretty

in fact any trait will be attacked, if the "Mob" decides she is worthy of attack........

"there was no reason to bully her, she was a pretty girl"

I find that statement worrying TBH, looks aren't everything.

People (?) who post this sort of mind thuggery to anybody anywhere of any age obviously have some pretty bad and dark problems of their own. Whether either HMP or the NHS can afford their residential treatment I have no idea.

If they were posting some poor quality jokes such as my plane is late, let's (deleted ) the air port we now know the "authorities" would have the boys in black around in short order. So excuses such as it is "difficult" are not very credible. Moreover this sort of harassment is a criminal offense.

These trolls are not all men and boys by any means. Most are not solitary misfits hiding in their cave (as the tv likes to think ) but have plenty of naff friends who think this sort of thing is cool. Just like nicking a motor and provoking the fuzz to a chase. All crimes have victims.

Crass and illegal but pretty well impossible to stop.

Schools and parents AND those minding net connections for aged parents will just have to educate others in how to avoid this sort of problem in the first place and then how to deal with it when it happens.

So sad.
