My black grandson

I have never had any children but I do have Ovambo friends in Namibia.

On Sunday night I rung them. We don't correspond much as neither end are very good at making the effort and mail doesn't always get there.

I was asked to speak to my grandson. Well, that was a surprise!

Different culture there. Everybody of the age of your parents you regard as also being you parents. So I have a two year old grandson with no effort on my part whatsoever.

That's lovely Sharron. Do you think this child will encourage both you and your friends to be in touch more often? I hope they send photos..... :-)

He has met the real grandmother but it took a bit to get him to remember her, like there is no ethnic mix here and he has seen no other black face in thirty years!

I do have their e-mail addresses and I have some pictures now but I have been waiting for the wooden giraffe the grandfather is supposed to be sending me for ten years now!

They are for sale on the side of the road there. People carve them out of old telegraph poles and I thought I would like one on the corner of my stairs. They make enormous ostriches out of bits of old metal too. I don't know how you would transport one if you bought it.

Edit........I have seen the carvings that are at the side of the road when we were in South Africa. They are very good but the quality does vary though and cheap if you haggle....... But difficult to get home !
