Security advice please

I have always understood that the first priority when receiving a suspicious email was not to open it.

I have recently acquired Windows Live Mail, and find this impossible. I had previously had Outlook Express and still also have a limited free web one with Orange. In both of these I could highlight with one click the name in the index to the Inbox, then click “delete” or “junk” to get rid of it but in Live Mail the first click to highlight the sender in the index opens the message.

Is there anyway round this? Or am I worrying needlessly?

I hate Live Mail! I don't bother using it and just open my email accounts using the web versions.

thanks - perhaps I needn't worry. I have to say I sympathise with MarieCeleste. and do find LiveMail difficult sometimes !

As BudgieRustler has said, the problem is not in opening the 'spam' emails it is if you open any attachments where the problem lies.

If I receive mail from an unknown sender... I delete it without opening it.
Especialy if there is an attachment!

I was on Hotmail and like most account holders, I ignored all the messages re changing to Outlook.
I really don't like the format, but, in hindsight, I realise that I should have paid attention.

It took me about 3 weeks to notice that my FB photo had been automatically added to my email acct! Every sent email had my pic on it!
Needed techno geek daughter to alter my setting and get it off there

Elizabeth, in Live Mail, you can hide the message.

Click on the View tab at the top screen; click click on Reading Pane and then click on Off.

You can play around with the other panes to get a view that suits you.

You have to double click to open the email from the Message list.

Potty - thank you, that is just the procedure I thought there must be somewhere!

Glasgow Lass - the way to delete without opening was exactly what l couldn't find. see my OP!

Feel much safer now, thank you all

Opening a suspicious email CAN be a problem.

One trick is to place an image in an email which is hosted on a remote server(computer).
When you open the email a request is sent to the server to retrieve the image.
At the very best, this confirms that the email address is "live".
This can also happen if you preview messages.
If any doubt, never open.

Thanks Errol - I was aware of the risk of opening suspicious e-mail which is why I was concerned - the procedure Potty gave me should enable me as I did before to delete or label junk without opening and I have it with the Off box marked, but I haven't had an email since to check the system!
