Yup. Standard membership, for 12 months.

I sometimes use my tree, haven't had a good contact with another member for ages, and I use the community boards.

I don't use any of the other GR search "goodies". They added some Scottish records recently, and I've researched most of my lot (on Scotland's People).

Funny discount :-S Especially for a long-time member.

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Aug 2013 06:58

Is that for a Standard membership????

it's quite an increase!

LadyScozz Report 12 Aug 2013 06:43

I got the email re my subscription.

I checked my records.

Last year I paid $15.98Aus.

This year I have been offered a 20% discount

They want $27.16 :-\ Not quite double.

I've been a member since June 2005.

I use the community boards. I rarely use my tree these days, and can't remember when I last made contact with a relative.

I don't use GR's records, I don't chat "live" with GR's genealogist (middle of the night here).

I think I'll give it a miss.

I think it shows a complete lack of interest ........

...... there should be TWO versions of an email

one aimed at new members, and one for renewing subscribers.

Not a "one size fits all"

Sylvia, that's the email I got. I'm not worried, just annoyed!!

If I hadn't entered my new card no. (as a new member) my subscription would have lapsed, because the old card had expired. Whether GR would have reinstated me at my current discounted 6-month rate is a moot point.

LadyScozz Report 11 Aug 2013 05:52

oooer, thanks for the reminder.

Mine are due 22nd August.

I use a hotmail account for GR, and haven't checked it for weeks (been kinda busy with other things!). I've probably got an email from them.

:-D

Thank you Sylvia ,

Your membership to Genes Reunited has been renewed for you as requested.

Your receipt reference:

You have been billed xxxxxxx for a 12 month Standard membership.

It's easy to get started on your family history:

Getting started

If you haven't already, add as many relatives as you know about to your family tree – grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles and great-grandparents if you know their names. It doesn't matter if you don't know much information about them yet as you can fill that in later. Don't forget to ask any living relatives you have about their memories of people in your family.

Start searching

Now you've got your tree growing nicely it's time to search for your relatives in over million trees on Genes Reunited. Search for your relatives – it's easiest to start with the furthest back relative you know about. A search on Genes Reunited looks through over million names added by other members to link your trees.

Don't be shy – send a message

When your search shows a possible match for one of your relatives … send a message. Your message will be sent through the site to the person who added this relative to their family tree. (Remember we never reveal your email address and your privacy is guaranteed). By sending messages you can find a connection to another family tree overnight. Then you can share information on your families and discover new ancestors. Many of our members have large family trees with over 100 people in them – so you could add huge branches to your family tree in minutes! And connecting with a real person means that you can share memories and photos that really bring your memories to life.

Share Trees

If you've found a connection with another tree on Genes Reunited, don't forget to share trees in Your Message Centre. This lets you quickly spot where your tree links with others on Genes Reunited and work out how you are related to your new contact.

Tip: Make sure we can always pass on messages from your potential relations. Add [email protected] to your address book or email approved list. If you don't your spam filter could stop messages getting through.

Your membership is currently set to Continuous. This means after the initial upgraded membership period, we will automatically extend your membership for the same period, to ensure uninterrupted service. We'll remind you of this nearer the time by email or you can change this at any time on the My Account page when you sign into Genes Reunited.

Good luck with tracing your family tree. We hope to see you very soon on Genes Reunited

Andysmum

don't worry

I got an email a month ago to say my sub would be due up on Aug 9, and I was getting a discount

I tried to find how to change my card ............... not just the number, but the card

No success

I got a reminder email 2 weeks ago

I tried again to change my card

Finally thought, blow it .................. OH will have to write a cheque to pay off my card :-D

I got the email on the morning of Aug 9 to say they had renewed me .................. and telling me how to start my tree and use GR

They would not have given me the discount I got if I'd been a new member!!

It must be the new general, one email fits all :-D :-D

Andysmum

Andysmum Report 10 Aug 2013 15:04

Mine was due 4/8 and I had the usual email reminder at the beginning of July (Standard, 6-months for £7.96)

I had to enter new card no. so looked at My Account. No box to fill in, so looked on Help and was told could only do it 2 weeks before renewal.

Feeling cross, I put a post on Suggestions that all details on Account should be visible all the time. (Some of you may have seen it, but I got a very prompt reply from Genes, so nobody commented.)

I followed Genes instructions and it looked like joining as a new member, so I waited until about 10 days before the sub was due.

Still no box on My Account, so I followed instructions and entered my new card no.

Result? :-S

I was welcomed as a new member, thanked for my payment and given a whole lot of stuff about how to start my tree!!

I wrote to Genes Support, saying I wasn't a new member and why had they taken my payment early.

I had a reply saying that I shouldn't have been treated as a new member, with an apology, but not a word about taking my payment early.

For £7.96 I wasn't too bothered, apart from the principle, but if I had been a Platinum member, taking the sub during the calendar month before it was due could have caused huge problems.

If I am still here when my card next needs changing, I shall do it the day before my sub is due - unless Genes have changed the system again by then.

Amokavid

Amokavid Report 10 Aug 2013 13:23

Shelley, I would email them.....

In the past I have always been sent a renewal reminder & along with it details of "loyalty" discounts, however this year with just 2 weeks to my renewal date I had heard nothing so felt the need to prompt them of my renewal date etc, this triggered a response of GRs usual reminder & another offering a loyalty discount on renewing within the time allowed.

Thanks for your replies everyone, my subs expire on the 14th and I've still not had any notification from GR, wondering if I should contact them? (all I really want to know is how much it's going to cost me)!

Barbinsglos
I am guessing that they mean you have to let your subscription expire before you can change to another type of subscription.
No need to rejoin with another account.

BarbinSGlos

BarbinSGlos Report 3 Aug 2013 15:25

I have had my reminder and usually buy 6 mths Platinum.

I contacted them to ask for 1 yr as it is cheaper and they said they had taken me off auto and I had to rejoin.

Can't figure that out, what a waste of time
