Janet - that code is correct but is in what is known as hexadecimal rather than ascii

(I won't bore you with that one lol)

In Word if you can't be faffed with ascii characters and it is not automatically converted as described by DET above then you can change the settings in Word etc

This will be different depending on the version of Office that you are using but basically you need to change the AutoCorrect settings.
I think the following will work for Office 2007 but I will double check later...

1. Click on the Office button and select "Word Options".
2. Click on "Proofing".
3. Click "AutoCorrect Options..."
4. In the box that opens click on the tab at the top that says "AutoFormat As You Type".
5. You are now presented with loads of options that will automatically correct or format as you type. Make sure there is a tick next to "Fractions (1/2) with fraction character (½)".
6. Click "OK".
7. Click "OK" again.

Now when you type 1/2 it should be automatically corrected to display ½

This will only work for the standard fractions but it is possible to set Word to display complex fractions too although a little more complicated.

Alternatively, you can create fractions in Word (and some other programmes) by using superscript and subscript characters...

1. Type the first character and highlight it.
2. Hold down Ctrl and Shift and press the + key.
3. Type the /
4. Type the second character and highlight it.
5. Hold down Ctrl and press the = key.

Hi LadyScozz/TenerifeSun and ERRol Sheep

Squeals of delight.

Written at the side of the character ¼ was U+00BC or should that be U+OOBC and I haven't been able to make sense but the list given makes excellent sense.

Thank you so much

Janet

Tenerife Sun is quite right - they are called ascii codes or characters.

If anyone wants a full list give me a shout.

NB it will only work if you use your number pad rather than the numbers across the top of your keyboard.

In XP this works, I don't know about other programmes.

Alt + 0188 = 1/4
0189 = 1/2
0190 = 3/4
0176 = the degrees symbol
0163 or 156 = £

Have a look at this link

Spotted this earlier and hoped that someone with IT knowledge would answer!

We have a more ancient version of word. It automatically creates fractions when we type in a word doc eg

1/2 and converts it into ½

The ½ shows up in Preview; fingers crossed it will still be there when posted!

I used to be able to do it on Vista but have never worked it out on W7. So would also be interested.

Does anyone know a shortcut for typing the basic fractions of a quarter, half, etc. on a computer, if there is one. OS Vista, Office 2007. I do know how to use the character map and get a result, but it seems such a faff. Thanks Janet.
