And I thought they wanted to reduce the number of Peers :-S

Businessman and Conservative donor Sir Anthony Bamford, former police officer Brian Paddick and the Green Party's Jenny Jones are among 30 new peers set to join the House of Lords.

Lot's on their mates in that list and no doubt the mates o their mates will ensure government policy is suitably drafted ;-)

I see Steven Lawrence's mother has been elevated to the peerage, and whilst I don't go much on peerages, she's a good choice

I noticed that Vicky Price was stripped of her Order of the Bath - now why can't they strip that crook Jeffrrey Archer of his knighthood

Many Governments have a second chamber. We have that (House of Lords) and the Queen also has to finally assent to anything passed in both Commons and Lords.

Plenty of people have disagreed with that system (Cromwell was not that happy about it in 17th century).

If we stick with present bi-cameral system, we need a strong House of Lords. We can either vote them (as in USA) in or elect them from the community (as now). What we mustn't do is let the two major political parties try and engineer a bias towards their policies so it just becomes a talking shop for rubber stamping what the Commons has decided.

Hereditary peers kept the House of Lords going 50 years ago. Now many of them in Westminster are life peers - like Baron Archer of Weston super Mare. And they do seem to earn a phenomenal amount of money for their attendance.
