I am new to this family search scene and wondered if someone could give me some advice. I have been looking at birth records and see that the mothers maiden name is given. How can I find out if any children were born to a marriage and full details of the fathers name of a particular person. is the only way to obtain a birth certificate for the person I am interested in?

Assuming you are looking at English/Welsh records, mother's maiden name (MMN) is only given in the index after Sept 1911.

To find the children of a particular marriage born after 1911 and up until approx. 1983, you can search by father's surname and MMN on this site:

not sure if searching the birth records on GR can be done the same way.

Of course, there could be more than one set of parents with the same surnames.

Yes, the only way to get full details is to buy the birth cert.

As Rollo said, general queries about tracing family history are better posted on the Genealogy Chat board. If you need help with a specific person or family, post on the Find Ancestors Board. Read the threads at the top of the boards first as these give a lot of info that will help you and read through some of the other threads, to give yourself an idea of how people can help.

if you start a thread, please give all the info you have, including how you have got back to the person/family (ie your connection to them)

of course it happens that children are born outside of marriage,
so you can sometimes find these if you search for children born to the M M N


ie

miss Brown might be married to mr Green but had had an earlier child by mr White........
so search for births to MMN Brown,

Thank you all so much for your help. My parents have recently passed away and I have since found out that my father was married previously and that there is a strong possibility that I havef brothers and sisters :-)

Parents of a child usually easy to locate info through Parish Records...That's how I started wife's trees....Your main town Public Library usually has a Rural Studies section like Oxford does...Ask when the local F H S come in as most have a couple of volunteers to assist people like you and me who struggle a bit...I have done Oxfordshire,,Berkshire,,Buckinghamshire and Warwickshire this way..I don't drive..Just use my bus pass..Usually have to make 3/4 trips..Well worth it though..If like Oxford they still have the books of transcriptions,,they make real good reading...Good luck ....LES...

As Potty and Barbara have said use freebmd to find his previous marriage and any children they may have had using the two surnames
