Hi Elizabeth Dawn,
Welcome to the boards.

'Start with what you know' is the best tip I can think of :-) Write down what you know, and work back.
Try to concentrate on one line/family at a time rather than attempting to do all of it, ie four grandparents = four directions!
The Genealogy Chat board is where you will learn a lot as well as being the place to post your family tree questions. Before I posted my first question I spent a couple of months just reading the stuff on there, it's amazing the tips you can pick up.

As for the tall stories, well, don't dismiss them completely. Keep them in the back of your mind, because most of them turn out to have a grain of truth in the end. We have all found that. In the past there have been a few threads on here about tall stories, and some of them are real howlers :-D :-D

And remember, it cannot be done overnight. Doing your family tree has no 'quick fix' solution - it is a long, but thoroughly enjoyable, journey.
Don't be afraid to ask questions, we all had to start somewhere. I learned a lot from asking questions here on GR .

Good luck ;-)
Karen

Welcome to the boards Elizabeth Dawn :-)

You will find some advice on adoption matters at the top of 'Find Living Relatives'board. 'Genealogy Chat' has some good tips and general advice like this thread which has links to various tips,

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1318489

Start with your self and work back, parents, grandparents, and members will be happy to help if you post giving some names and dates on the 'Find Ancestors' board.

I think we all have found complicated family lol and family stories that have been 'half true'. :-D

Hi to all. This is completely new to me, and the background of my family very complicated, (adoption, and lots of tall stories.) I hope eventually to trace back as far as I can go and would appreciate any advice from anyone who has had a similar experiences. I just seem to be running into brick walls. Thanks for reading this.
