Home Secretary Teresa May diagnosed as Diabetic

If I hear another news report about the Home Secretary Teresa May being diagnosed as having Diabetes I will scream. These reports demonstrate how the media blow every day situations out of all proportion.

In saying that, as an insulin dependent diabetic, I can sympathise with every single one of the millions of people who have to deal with this illness every single day of their life, and Teresa May is nothing more and nothing less than just one of those people.

It is has been reported about every 30 minutes today that "courageous" Home Secretary Theresa May has vowed to carry on her political career after revealing that doctors have told her she must inject herself with insulin at least twice a day for the rest of her life. She said that it does not and will not affect her ability to do her work.

For goodness sake, people are diagnosed with this illness every day and there are currently an estimated 3 million people in the UK who have diabetes. Between 10% to 15% are Type 1 which is usually treated by insulin injections and between 30% to 40% of those with Type 2 also use insulin injections to control their diabetes, most manage to lead a full and active life.

So she has got diabetes and has to inject herself with insulin, big deal, what does she want, a medal, or maybe she is hoping this will get her party the sympathy vote of the estimated 3 million who suffer daily with this condition - you can be sure she won't need to worry about being able to afford a healthy and balanced diet and nor will she have to take a ticket and queue for hours at the local hospital for her regular blood tests.

To be fair, I don't think that it is her who is fuelling the media frenzy.

I agree with you Sheila. I read (though we all know how truthful journalists are with their reporting) that because she has lost weight there were comments/rumours flying about so she was just open about her recent diagnosis.

If she hadn't said she had diabetes the rumours etc would not have stopped, and then people would have been fed up with her being in the papers anyway . :-S

Well If Tm has Diabetes.that has blownthe doctors theories out of the window.
The docs are always saying you only get diabetes if you are overweight..

Friend has had diabetes since she was 23 and injecting at least twice a day.

overweight is usually quoted as one of the trigger for Type 2 diabetes with inadequate supplies of insulin - not Type 1

As said before I very much doubt if she is behind the media furore.

Remember it is the weekend and they are notoriously quiet on the newsfront.

And if through this constant barrage (though I have seen none!) one person gets themselves checked out. Hey is that a bad thing....

:-D

to be fair,it may have been a shock to her,but im sure she will cope just like the millions of men.woman and children who deal with it every day. :-)

Yes,journalists again

During the week there was a report commenting on her loss of weight and suggesting it was part of a "make over" in preperation for an attempt to gain the Conservative Party Leadership (did no one else hear it ?)

I suspect she thought it better to put things straight

I agree that many newspapers often add spin to their interviews but I do find it strange that she decided to divulge this information at this precise moment in time.

She did this just at the same time as an influential committee of MPs was due to release a damming and depressing report on the way immigration/migration figures are calculated, as one witness put it "Disney World has a better way of recording visitors than the UK."

Personally I don't place any credence on reports that she did this to put a stop to rumours about her weight loss and leadership ambitions, such banter in the House of Commons is par for the course, government ministers get this sort of thing every time they stand at the Despach Box.

One thing is for sure, she certainly grabbed the headlines and pushed everything else further down the pages ;-)
