I often have trouble getting to sleep and heard a useful tip on the radio a few weeks ago - make sure you can't see a clock in your bedroom.

It works like this - you're trying unsuccessfully to go to sleep and you look at the clock thinking e.g. "it's 2 am and I'm not asleep" then later "it's 2.30 am and I'm still not asleep". Seeing as you need to be fairly relaxed in order to go asleep then you're contributing to your sleeplessness by agitating about the time that you're still awake.

I now have my alarm clock where I can't reach it or see the time - it's really worked for me. Granted, if the cause of insomnia is down to medical or personal situation then this mightn't work but thought worth passing on if it helps anyone else.
