I do hope so. Something has to be done.

Rambling Report 22 Jul 2013 17:29

Only partially.

The option of 'family friendly only' will be a useful first step in protecting children from accessing pornography accidentally, but it won't stop people who opt out of that from actively searchiing for pornography.

My view is, if people opt out - they will be noticed!!
If monitoring of people's internet viewing is to be done - I can't think of a more worthy group of people to start on :-D

Then you get the cry of,,,,,censorship for those that want to view the legal trash.

But wholeheartedly I back it and hope it forges ahead with fantastic results.

In the form in which David Cameron and the Daily Mail have been talking about the matter no, not a snowflakes chance. That is why both the ISPs and CHEOPS have been so against govt proposals. False security.

I suppose the best description of the proposals would be using a colander to hold water or the well worn phrase "The Jumblies went to sea in a sieve."

At the most basic level in order to totally avoid the proposed filters all anybody has to do is to use their own router - a decent Buffalo AirStation s/h is £ 30 - and set up their own parameters for DNS and so on. I use Google DNS which is a lot faster than the ISP. Maybe a lot of people do not realise that the DVDs which ISPs tend to ship with their routers are entirely redundant and the computer can be connected to the internet without them.

Thus no ISP software, no ISP router no ISP filter whether registered or not. Then there is Linux which ISPs tend to ignore.

The idea that these nutters go through Google and the web is so pathetically naive I wonder just who Dave gets his advice from. The Daily Mail which has all kinds of prurient stuff on its web page ? Surely not .... I don't think the DM target is just kiddie porn etc anyway but all over 18 legal adult porn.

These people use hidden newsgroups, file sharing systems and other bits and pieces of the so called "Dark Web". Journos go on and on about Tor but its main use is to let dissidents in such places as Syria and Iran to get their message out. Tor can be back tracked from the US side ( the USA govt created Tor ) and is too slow for sharing videos and what have you. There are better alternatives.

For sure this thriving industry should be bust up 'cos apart from the nasty pix and videos it is closely associated with all kinds if real world exploitation. However it is like Japanese knotweed it can be cut down for a while but will grow again somewhere else.

In order to cut it back then the government will need a lot bigger task force than 4 people looking at dodgy photos. Moreover it will need people to go out under cover and infiltrate some of these groups. It needs real money, know how and courage none of which the present government has.

Very serious money is made out of the industry and the people getting the dosh don't like being messed around with. They also have a big slush fund. "Catch me if you can" - it is more lucrative than running drugs and less risky.

Nah, they don't give a toss. It is just silly season page filler designed to get the DM off the phone and grab some "we're doing something" votes.

OTOH Dave and co may be thinking of bringing in serious internet censorship and all this is a cover. A fomented row with Google and others would be a good excuse. See here:

http://www.slideshare.net/tlloyduk/censor-net-professional

And there are far more powerful systems. The UK is a leading developer and supplier of IT hardware and systems software for web surveillance and control.

Which would suit GCHQ right down to the ground.

Oh yes. This wildly primitive filter system may possibly block people under 13 for a bit, those a bit older less and most over 15s an hour or so. Practically all secondary school systems have been hacked by the pupils and more than a few are under pupil control, often with very negative consequences.

It is a stupid strategy which is certain to make what is a nasty bunch of steaming c-p alluring, the same way as smoking and booze have been so attractive with all the "have u an id " nonsense. Utter failure to understand teenage psychology.

Quem deus vult perdere, dementat prius.

The internet makes the Wild West and inner city estates look like the Boys Brigade!
Time real effort (and money) was put into stopping internet crime as well as child porn. The trouble is dear old David is only making noises that the spin doctors have scripted for him.

My worry is as Rollo says there will be some clumsy half***d measures put in that will make life hard for innocent users who might be trying to research something like a medical problem only for the programme to say. “What, a large expanse of skin with red spots that looks dodgy you ‘ain’t viewing that“!

On the other hand the paedophiles will simply invent new nicknames for their practices that will sound completely innocent, but those in the know will home in on them in no time. You do need to infiltrate the culture and have people full time tracking down content.

I'm sure the IT experts are aware of what Rollo has outlined,,,,,and they of course arent going to make public what will be going on behind the scenes.....

There is an underground www lanuage used by these sick people to find what they are looking for....
