I live in London where there is continuous work by Thames Water to replace the old Victorian pipes.

If they had maintained the underground network like they used to in the past (both my father and grandfather worked for the Metropolitian Water Board, which became Thames Water). They a lot of this work would have been carried out years ago and at a far cheaper cost.

And do not get me started on leaks. Near to me, I have over the last 5, YES 5 years reported a leak, well they have finally sorted out in the last month.

Too busy paying dividends to shareholders and charging us a fortune, thus leaving it so long that the whole underground substructure is knackered (technical term).

As long as any Utility company has to pay out dividends to shareholders it is the public who suffer.

I think the cold wet winter and spring helped but yes they deserve a pat on the back. They do seem to have had a lot of pipe renewing etc in this area so maybe they have fixed a lot of leaks (Severn Trent).

We had a hosepipe ban last year when half the country was under several feet of water :-S

If they were all British owned then I would cheer them.....

I am not sure that we have ever had a hosepipe ban, not for a very long time anyway.

Southern Water, up the road have had them but the mighty Portsmouth Water Company keep all their water in aquifers.

I must admit, I expected some comment.

My friend and I went to a reservoir over at Saddleworth on Thursday and appreciated the work that had been done to welcome visitors. I had never seen so many butterflies in my life and commented that I only ever saw a Cabbage White and a Red Admiral as a child. Unusual wild flowers had been planted including some sort of wild orchid.

The only down side on the blistering hot day was seeing young men dive into the water when it had already been reported that four people had lost their lives that week doing such a thing. -jl

Yes I'll join you in this Harry :-)

There was a hiccup in the local supply for a few hours , and Severn Trent, were right on the problem to fix it and keeping everyone informed on facebook, plus an apologetic letter followed. I've been surprised there hasn't been a shortage, remembering the similar heatwave in 1976.

:-)

The various water boards. As far as I know, there haven't been any threats of hose-pipe bans, which to me is quite amazing.

They're so easy to criticise when things go wrong.

Shoot me down if you wish.

Happy days
