Bobtanian Report 6 Jul 2013 11:43

"We have made a decision to stop selling lanterns and recalled all remaining stock from stores," a Poundland spokesperson said.

The government has refused to ban the lanterns nationwide.

'Follow suit' call

A spokesperson said they caused a "very small" number of fires.

Vij Randeniya, chief fire officer for the West Midlands, said Poundland's decision would make "a direct contribution to public safety" and called on other responsible retailers to "follow suit as soon as possible".

regarding the comment, "They cause a small amount of fires............"

edited......compared to motor vehicle related deaths, and domestic homicides....
Legally held Handguns caused a small amount of murders, but they still got banned.........

I think they should be banned............setting something on fire and sending it to an unknown destination makes no sense at all to me.

They cause a small amount of fires, but also an uncounted damage to grazing animals, so yes I am afraid they should be banned...I'm surprised the NFU haven't put pressure on the government, they're usually a powerful enough lobby.

Can't see the point of them.

Read some horrifying accounts of fires, caused by lanterns on here a week or so ago

I have some in my cupboard ... I will not use them now

Yes, they should be banned

The current lacklustre UK Government has a habit of banning anything that gives us a bit of fun & happiness.

When something goes wrong, the politicos & bureaucrats love to identify a scapegoat & heap all the blame in that direction.

I believe there have been numerous crop fires caused by them. They are, after all, launched more in the summer when the crops are standing and dry.

It was not until a substantial fire was ignited in commercial premises that anybody took a great deal of notice.

You eat what is standing in the countryside!
