Only a month after more than 1,100 Bangladeshi garment workers lost their lives in the collapse of a badly-built and poorly-maintained eight - story building, the new building code has - thankfully - gone into force ... and its rigid practices are already being applied by highly-skilled and properly-trained construction teams labouring on job-sites all across the sub-continent.

Especially for those of you with some construction work in your background,

The foreman is the guy on the tambourine.

There was a building site right outside our hotel in Swakopmund.

The men were there at six in the morning but worked quietly until about eight.

The crane was a site to behold. It had not cab, just a bit of a platform with some bars around it and the operator had brought a kitchen stool to sit on.

No hard hats or anything poofy like that.

A few years ago they were piling on a site that was to be a retirement home complex, I was watching one day as the crane lifted the pile and stood it in place.....gave one tap on the top and the pile disappeared into the ground.. they put another on top of that and the same thing happened.....I said to the guy how many piles have you lost?
A few he says, so I said dont you know that there is a lake under there?
no he says,how come?
So I said it used to be a rifle range and there always was a lake at the hundred yards end right where you are now.............
