My first thought is...Don't be tempted to phone! It really is better to write a letter that can be read and re-read by your mother , before further contact is made. It can be a huge shock and when you're on the phone you are 'trapped' into instant decision making so to speak.

Write a calm letter, just saying who you are and that you have been looking for someone of her name etc, and would be grateful if she could let you know if you have found the right person. Enclose an SAE in case it is not the right person so it doesn't cost then anything to respond.

Good luck :-)

Makes sense what Rose says. Is there anyone who could act as a mediator?

If you obtained your details though Social Services & a SW they will make contact on your behalf which could be a more secure and responsive way.

Yes. Might also be better to hang fire with revealling your full address for the time being.

It is possible to give a return address as c/o (care of) a Post Office using the 'Poste Restante' service which you set up first (see http://www.postoffice.co.uk/poste-restante)

although I don't have any personal experience of it.
