I hate Tennis with a vengeance. loathe footie

Will tolerage Rugby

and am looking forward to the Ashes.

But surely the Beeb could use their channels more selectively. At present Tennis and repeats. Dull Dull Dull

Thank goodness for Sky+ and BBC4 and history channels. Still have around 6 hours of interesting stuff to watch....

Oh and does anyone remember about 15 years ago (when sky was young and very few of us had it)

On a Saturday morning (quite early) they used to show the Asian game of Kabbadi (think thats how it was spelt)

What an amazing game. Really got hooked, mainly a girls game and the teams played in pairs holding hands. You have to see it to understand.

Even OH got into this at the time..

DC, I love most sports, but the sports I'm not keen on I often listen to, and enjoy the conversations that are had, about where they are in the world, or who said who to what who. I think golf is my least favourite of games, yet when the big matches are on, I listen to them on the radio, I've learnt a lot about other Countries, and about those who play, or the people around them. I'm not really a TV person, don't watch soaps, or reality stuff, so a lot of my day, when I'm in the radio is always on :-D

SheilaSomerset Report 1 Jul 2013 15:40

The only sport I don't mind watching is tennis, specifically Wimbledon. I went off it for a few years when it all seemed to be huge serves and nothing else, but now more players have a more varied game. I also love it when the weather is good during Wimbledon, somehow it's an essential part of summer and reminds me of hurrying home from school to watch :-D

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 1 Jul 2013 15:41

Well I like tennis, I like it on multiple screens and platforms with a choice of matches and I like the mostly well informed commentary. I like and admire our rising star Laura Robson who plays an entertaining game.

I also like champagne and strawberries.

If you don't like Wimbledon fortnight, then tuf.
Why not look for an enthralling GO contest or Japanese sumo?

DazedConfused

DazedConfused Report 1 Jul 2013 15:56

You may say tuf

But what about those pensioners who only have channels 1-5.

I remember some years ago that mum who was by this time living on her own. Called one Sunday afternoon. Now she could not get channel 5. And on the other 4 channels it was all sport. Just no good enough.

I pay my TV licence and the Beeb is not catering to mine and many others viewing preferences. And as I am housebound I am a captive audience......

Sumo wrestling - you having a pop :-D :-D :-D

What programmes do you like Dazed and Confused?

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 1 Jul 2013 16:56

It is impossible to only have channels 1-5 only,

In the UK analog TV ( 1-5) has been switched off and the bandwidth will be used for LTE mobile phones.
For those without Virgin Cable, FreeSat, Sky or one of the ethnic satellite services then one or more of these are true:

FreeView which gives about 24 channels + some ad channels INCLUDING BBC red button ; working s/hand receivers are £ 5-10

TV over internet eg BBC iPlayer, ITVPlayer

deuce

You said you like Asian games. Not Sumo? I like Mongolian polo one of the most thrilling games in the world but sadly my bareback riding is no way up for it.

maggiewinchester Report 1 Jul 2013 17:23

Have to agree with Dazed.
Even with freeview, it's either films - which I don't watch, sport, which I don't like, repeats or cheap 'reality' TV.
I want entertainment, I don't want to spend my evening watching police chasing cars, other people in houses - be that big brother or watching other people watching TV - what is that about?
I really don't want to watch programmes about how a family has
a)lots of children
b) lives well on benefits
c) doesn't live well on benefits
d) is grossly overweight
etc etc

Not only cheap TV - but also divisive.

I'm just thankful for Radio 4 extra. I like Poirot & Miss Marple on TV, the old radio shows are good, but I'm worried I may become word perfect if they replay then too often,

I don't like sport much....HID will watch football and motor racing, but as I pay for the sky he wasn't going to get any sports channels :-D

I very rarely record anything now as the sky HD has catch up...so have plenty of things to choose from, when I am on my own

Rollo, that is not quite correct, as it depends on signal strength.

I have a Free View box upstairs, I can get 1-5 (sometimes no ITV), a few odd channels that show repeats, Adult/Shopping Channels & little else. The rest are Radio Channels.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 2 Jul 2013 16:13

There are some Freeview dead spots or only ch 1-5.
Poss. reasons, other than being located in Rockall etc

(a) wrong tupe of aerial, not set up correctly, affected by a change in the main transmitter
fix - ensure correct aerial and that is setup properly (warning: there are a lot of cowboys who offer to do this )
(b) some fairly old Freeview boxes will not ug for the new setup. They just have to be replaced; some TVs with built in Freeview also have this problem. Fix is an external Freeview box or a new TV.
(c) v poor reception area - many of these are in south London where Virgin cable also has a lot of problems
fix: get a power booster - these have to be fitted to the aerial which is the landlord's job with a block of flats
(d) v poor reception caused by LTE rollout - one fix is a booster which can be got for free

That being said most people just go for Virgin or Sky.
TalkTalk have a sort of superduper Freeview called YouView. Nice bit of kit, does HD and recording, NO SUB (!)
Those without TalkTalk can just buy a YouView box but they are a bit expensive.

Mayfield

Mayfield Report 2 Jul 2013 17:35

I don’t watch sport which it seems is strange for a bloke. Football leaves me cold how can you get so worked up about a team where none of the players were born in the local area let alone the country. They are Frankenstein clubs made up of whatever players they can afford.

The Mrs is at present glued to the tennis, I will watch a good match if it’s on but wouldn’t bother to put the telly on to see it, unless hmmm maybe ……………thinking, Ladies Topless Doubles. ;-)

Oh dear perhaps I'd better keep a low profile for a while :-D :-D

Still, Rollo, even with all the channels working there's nothing new on.

Most of TV rubbish, can't be bothered to watch it most days. I do not watch soaps, reality TV, sport, films are on too late when you're up at 5.30am. I am an active 74 year old so work, walk and in the evening go on puter, facebook, GR and window shop on Ebay. ;-)

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 2 Jul 2013 19:18

On Sundays rpt Mondays channel 4 has a French thriller (with subtitles) "The Returned". All episodes are available on catch up. It has good reviews and the subtitles are accurate.

Then there have been the recent programs about London life.

And there is always on old episode of Frost / Lewis / Rebus on somewhere.

Sometimes a good movie on Channel 4.

And if all else fails there is always Lovefilm.

And even if there really is nothing on at all I don't remember being especially bored during the blackouts during the miner's strikes
;-)

And very soon the best live sport of the year THE ASHES !!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear All

Hello

Hope you are okay.

Now don't be downhearted........the Euro Football tournament
for our lady footballers will soon be with us!

I think next Monday, freeview is adding a new channel purely for drama series.
Looks good.

Take gentle care
Best wishes
