I've researched my grandad's best 'mate's' family.
My mum knew him as 'Uncle Stan', but his real name was George.
He also had an unusual surname.
I have a photo of Stan at my grandparent's wedding in 1925, also his merchant navy photo.
Stan's dad was from Barbados, his mum was at least 5th generation Southampton - and Stan was black - not mixed race at all, neither was his mum.
So much for the Empire Windrush - which my (white) parents and brothers came to England on in 1950 - it was a troopship then.
Stan was a schoolmate of my grandads. They ended up working in the docks together. Stan went out with a white woman - they never had children. I'm now researching his 5 brothers.
Black people have lived in Britain since before the end of slavery.
I like to view things from a different point of view!!

Look up Samuel Coleridge Taylor - and get the last two names in the right order!! :-D

I shall look forward to this one cropping up Rose.

The only non ancestor I have researched was the female who my Gt Gt Grandfather and his wife worked for, her will and her family were really interesting and
D a far cry from my coach drivers and maids.

One of my 2nd cousins 3 x removed married the daughter of an artist. I researched the artist and his familty, even finding dutch records and found it fascinating.

My sister was given a painting after her friend died, painted by an ancestor of the friend. I also researched this artist and his family and work.

Why this fascination for artists I don't know - personally I don't have an artistic bone in my body, and have never progressed from drawing a cat, (2 circles, whiskers, a tail and two ears - back view of course!!) ;-)

I'm always getting sidetracked on the newspaper archive.

There was one story which I thought was just too good to be true and like you Rose followed it through.

It was a divorce case. A very prominent doctor who had also qualified as a solicitor, so very intelligent cited one of his doctor colleagues, an obstetrician, as co respondent in the divorce of 1891. His wife was accused of adultery with the obstetrician whilst she was his patient. The reason he decided to divorce his wife was because he had been to a palmist on Margate promenade who told him his wife was or was about to have an affair. He went home and told his wife, who also went to see the palmist who told her that she must confess her misdemeanour. The case ran over two days.

It was hilarious reading the affidavit in the divorce papers.

The obstetrician was cleared of adultery. The divorce was granted.

well I haven't yet, but while I was searching the newspaper archives I found the inquest on my gt gt, but above it was a very interesting report of a trial.

A suspicious death following a thwarted love affair, parental disapproval of an unsuitable suitor, pills and potions... and I was gripped lol. I followed the family through on the census, and think it might make a great story...but I am not skilled enough in historical accuracy to put it in 'place and time' I don't think.

Have you come across anything not actually connected to your own family that has fascinated you enough to research it?
