One of the small pleasures of going to Wales

over the weekend was listening to the train announcements in Welsh ;-)

I especially like the one where they announce that all train and stations are 'no smoking' areas, ie 'Dim Ysmugu'... whilst I know what it means the phonetic 'i-smug-ee' always sounds to me like an admonition against being smug, and I imagine the rest of it is 'do not be a smug so and so, anyone who is being smug will be put in the stocks and pelted with Welsh cakes' :-)

The pronunciation of place names like Machynlleth, Talsarnau, Llwyngwril and Pen y chain is also diverting when read by someone unused to them. :-D

I do think it very unfair that they won't let anybody called Allan go in anywhere.

George! as if I would ;-) mind you I was glad to be coming home but more because of the very few channels I could get on the tv and the lack of a computer there...I could do without both if I had books instead but I didn't have those either lol.

You see notices all over the place saying " Allan Out".

When Fred had his batty old girlfriend we always called them the henoid and we do like to go to the archfarchned at the weekend. Much more fun to say than supermarket!

Aaah our Rose.....Machynlleth.....during the very sad April Jones case 100% of English news reporters couldn't pronounce it. Himself and I always shouted at the TV for a) their insensitivity and b) their lack of effort in asking how to pronounce it.

Sometimes when just listening to the news we have no idea which town/village they are talking about, we have to look at the screen in the hope of spotting a sign post.

to be honest some place names are very difficult to pronounce, but I do think newsreaders and journalists should check it out first

Plaid Cymru always trips them up, not the Plaid, but the Cymru - which they always pronounce Coomry instead of Cumry

Sue, it was very sad going through Machynlleth for the first time since April Jones went missing, I couldn't help but think, looking at the river and estuary, what a wide area the search teams had to cover, the tide was right out further than I had seen it before, which emphasised just how strong the tides are there.

On a lighter note it was nice to see the Dyfi osprey nest , pointed out to travellers as we passed :-)
