I didn't report the OP but felt uncomfortable reading it this morning after the weekend uproar. I know it was in a different context but........ too soon.

The fall out from the weekend doesn't yet seem to be over.

But it was not about the fall-out over the week-end.

It was about the way I perceived a word. There were no veiled implications about anybody, apart from nameless interfering old biddies in my youth. There were no swear words, only the use of a brand name which I thought would be less offensive than naming the item in question.

I use the word all the time, we use it as a term of enderment among my circle of friends
We use it if somone does somthing daft, we will say aw ya douche!
Regardless of what the real meaning is, "I didn't know till the said thread" that is not how we perseve the word, and so don't use it in the context of its real meaning


No one round here would take offence to it as its not said in that way,

I cited the Tampax advert in the original post. It was the Mother Nature woman I was alluding to.

l had never heard of the word either....don't like it either, but l'm sure Sharron used it in the best context??

I had heard of the word about 50 odd years ago, didn't really know what it was about! and certainly never heard it in common day talk....just not nice

I believe there are some countries where it is done as a routine matter of hygiene, just like washing your feet but, then again, I once had a Bengali boyfriend who thought it disgusting that we didn't have a good wash before we stepped into the bath.

The other is exactly what Frederick was referring to, as an enema

I can just about get my head round Nan using it the way I meant but I don't think I even want to think about her trying to do an enema with THAT hosepipe.

I wasn't much older when I thought I would try reading Little Men by Louisa May Alcott and that mentioned a line of douche pipes in a home for boys.

Confused wasn't in it.

It amazed me (astonished??) the first time I went to buy a hot water bottle at a pharmacy over here .....

they were all either in plastic bags or boxes, and labelled ........

Rubber Douche Bag and Hot Water Bottle.

You can still buy the dual purpose ones, but also single purpose rubber hot water bottles.
