Bristol car-free Sunday closes roads

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-22982940

Sounds interesting - wonder how the local residents take it.

Tick for like.................... :-D

Like...... :-D

One thing I noticed is that it will only happen one Sunday in four. So you sit out having your coffee and croissante one Sunday and then have a leisurely walk or get pushed round the centre of Bristol (which is a lovely city). Next week you try to do the same and a bendy bus nearly knocks you over!!!!!

A similar thing is happening in Norwich - parents have arranged to close their road to traffic for two hours one day a month through the summer for play sessions. :-D

Hadn't realised that cars had reached Norwich, Lindi :-S Only joking. Norwich is another lovely city - used to visit an elderly Tesco manager, Taffy Ward, in the market place store. Highest sales per square foot of any Tesco shop in 1970's. And he was a brilliant manager.

If car parking and access for disabled is good, most of these town centres could liven up - particularly on nice summer days. There seems little reason why vehicles and people should always be in same places, after all :-)

It all very good, until someone realises that there are no other routes

Locally some people want the Greenwich Town Centre closed to car (some want it permanently)

Fine, but then the only other route in is across Blackheath, 1 lane each way. No serious alternatives, you could go through the other side of Blackheath via Lewisham, but eventually you all end up on the same road.

Some years ago Blackheath was closed completely for some months when a large hole appeared (chalk mines) and this part of South London was gridlocked the whole time. You had to leave at least an extra hour on your journey. Trains, buses etc., were packed to way over capacity.

So fine for the occassional Sunday, but even then people still have to get to work...

I remember the market place store John, did a lot of my shopping there when I lived in the city centre. Am now on the coast - did consider going through to Norwich this morning but thought better of it lol.
