Have strawberries hanging in one of those bags, but since yesterday all the leaves are curling and on the 'aerial roots' white stuff had formed so snipped them off. Can anyone tell me what is wrong please.

Hello Kim..Just been looking in my gardening "bible" re strawberries...It sounds like Strawberry mildew....Take off all affected runners and leaves and destroy don't out them in compost bin...Could be caused by over watering or a fungal disease.. Try a light watering of sulphate of ammonia ...Do you feed them at all??? Tomato feed is good but so is seaweed extract,,that's what I use for nearly everything,,especially my specialist plants...If not successful may be best to destroy plants and get a disease free stock....The ammonia won't affect the taste of the fruits by the way.....Double cream or single??? Me I'll have both please.....LES....

I agree with Leslie - the problem could well be caused by a fungus. Are there drainage holes in the bag? If not, the roots could have become too wet and then become affected by the recent hot weather, due to lack of aeriation.

Sounds exactly like over watering or poor drainage.
There is always a temptation to water strawberries too much but as said above, nip off the affected parts and then lessen the watering a tad.

Thanks everyone, this is the first time I have grown my own fruit and veg.

Have nipped off the runner bit's that were white but after what you guy's have said think I could be over watering. We are south facing so everything is watered once or twice a day, going to leave them for a day or so and see what happens.

Thank you so much for your advice

xx from the the novice lol

Les yes I have been feeding them once a week with Miracle Gro xx

Even the growers are having problems, I saw on tv the other night. Something else that will end up being more expensive this "Summer"

Hope your plants recover Kim

Oh yes ,the watering.

I am new to growing anything, Fred wouldn't let me in the garden!

Luckily I took advice from a neighbour about watering or I would have had stuff floating away I think.

I have a pretty good crop of wild strawberries from that one tiny plant I was nurturing that OH threw away because he decided it was a dead coriander!

I'll dead coriander him!

Hi Kim..Miracle Grow is OKish,,but it is a general feed..For fruit you must have something high in potash content, like tomato feed....Last year my brother in London grew bed strawberry plants in hanging baskets...Beautiful crop...Good luck...LES.
