For several yrs ive worked with some brilliant care assistants on the wards and in the community,my job would be so much harder without them.

some of these people are very highly trained but get treated like muck and dont get the credit they deserve .instead credit for the jobs done go to those higher up.

would like to see care assistants paid fairly for the brilliant work they do :-D :-D

Have worked with various care agencies for several years with aged parents.

While most are professional and well trained, their jobs are made more difficult because they are underpaid, under valued and over worked.

They often have impossible schedules to try and keep, and have hours and shifts changed at very short notice.

MIL is in a care home where the staff are brilliant, but we are fortunate to be able to self fund and therefore choose the home, but the cost ....£700 pw.

And also in private care homes.

Things may have moved on considerably since I used to visit homes 12 + years ago. Then, care workers would work incredibly hard in a very difficult environment for very little reward. But suspect things are still like they were 12 years ago.

Absolutely spot on, Suzanne.

Yes, most are great...BUT, there are some that are not.

i am talking about NHS care assistants, but agree that its also bad in the private sector.

NHS care assistants out in the community are highly trained in some medical procedures and will use their skills on a daily basis,

ive worked with care assistants that are better than nurses and ive also worked with some very clever assistants some with degree"s

some people think your a care assistant because your not clever enough to be a nurse, but thats not always true, people take up the job for several reasons,

flexible hrs.
a bit of extra money.
or just something to do while the kids are in school.

i worked as a care assistant myself, for experiance before starting my training.

Can't praise ours highly enough.

We are always grateful to them, give them Christmas presents (Fred's Grotto) and make sure there is always a basket of little chocolate bars for them. For hot weather I also keep ice-pops in the freezer for them because I think it ensures warm hands!

It doesn't cost me much and I hope it shows our appreciation but I know they do have clients who ring up and complain about silly little things. Why they would do that I really can't think because they would have so much more to complain of if the carers didn't come!

That sounds so funny, Sharron. I burst out laughing. But was I supposed to? not sure :-)

There lies the problem - it's considered a 'vocational' job - apparently done for love not money. Even worse, a 'woman's' job - ie we can pay even less.
YET local and district councillors (mainly male) - who don't work for money, but because they are 'doing something for the community' receive an awful lot of 'subsistence'.
Looking at our local councillors, their 'subsistence' is twice my pay!! :-P
